RAW files from DSLR & Win Xp problems.
« on: November 21, 2009, 07:54:04 PM »
There's a few shutterbugs here, so I figure it can't hurt to ask.

We switched our Nikon D60 to RAW (.NEF Nikon ) + JPG and Xp won't display the RAW files (or .NEF's) at all. I've installed the Nikon RAW Codec, and gotten the Microsoft RAW powershell extension. I have a .NEF filetype association in my file types list, and when I browse the camera when connected via USB, we only see the .jpg thumbnails listed twice, and the .NEF/RAW's aren't listed at all.

I don't even really need to see thumbnails of the .RAW files, even though that's SUPPOSED to work. I just need to see icons for the files so we can drag and drop them over.

I can get at them with Photoshop, but doing so would allow the Photoshop indexer screw up where the images go in our archives. So we move them FIRST, then let the Photoshop organizer pick up where they are.

I promise not to duck.

Have you tried popping the card into a reader versus going directly from the camera?

Yeah, same result.

It's really weird. Everything I'm searching on RAW files .NEF in particular (Nikon Electronic Format) not working properly in Xp, is about the thumbnails/previews not working, or not being able to view them in the standard windows viewer.

In my case, the .NEF files won't show up at all. I can see the .JPG thumbnails, strangely listed twice, but not the .NEF file.

If I import them in through PS, then they can be browsed in windows, and the thumbnails even work, but a quick drag-n-drop from the camera just won't show them at all.

Thanks.

However, we have no problem reding the RAW/NEF files if we can get them on the computer. We let PS load the files from the camera, and let the PS Organizer do it's worst to where the files went.

It simply can't see them on the camera, which is weird.

For now, we'll just stick with .JPEG until Mrs. Dual gets her Vista laptop back.
