Comp TIA study/book recommendations?
« on: January 04, 2010, 06:33:48 PM »
I've been meaning to get a CompTIA A+ cert, and looking at the study-guide type books that are available.  Quite a few choices.  Anybody got any pointers?

Don't do it.

JMO, but it's close to worthless.

You won't get hired with a CompTIA A+ and no work experience.

Focus on Microsoft credentials.  I forget what they call them now, but when I was studying them for the 2000 era products a single test was an MCP (Microsoft Certified Professional) for a given product, and several MCP's would stack together to make a larger credential such as MCSE or MCDBA.

Get the "MCP" or current equivalent for Windows 7.  Then focus on the latest server OS MCP... if you want to work in this stuff.

"AZRedhawk44"
CompTIA Network+
Novell CNA
Microsoft MCDBA, MCP
(and some other little ones specific to particular products)

ETA:

Reason why I emphasize the MS cert over the CompTIA, is because CompTIA has a hardware component and a software component.  Your current use of computers seems to be rebuild/salvage/resell.  Your hardware components will all be different based on who made them, and vendors such as HP/Compaq/Dell tend to deviate from the "standards" presented in the hardware components of the CompTIA test.

As for software... no one will hold you to a higher standard for Windows OS knowledge than microsoft.  CompTIA's software component isn't as good.

seconded.

Only do it if your company pays for the cert, and you get a raise and/or better job out of it.
