Best vodka?

Anyone have any suggestions for a great, preferably Russian, vodka?  This is for straight up shots, not mixed.

Stolichnaya Elit; usually about $70/bottle but worth it.

I like Chopin Vodka.  It's Polish, not Russian, but is a true potato-vodka.

Wery smoot!

Stoli Eiit, like he said.

If you don't want too much "vodka taste," then you're looking for Belvedere.

If you're looking to get drunk, then you want Stoli 100.

If you want something different, then you want Absolut Black Currant

My sentimental favorites Belvedere and Chopin have been mentioned. If you want something in the "we were drinking flavored vodka before it was metrosexual cool" category, there is only one option. Stoli OKHOTNICHYA. If you can find it.

Made locally here.  A vodka distilled from honey.  Best-tasting smoothest vodka I've ever come aross, and I've come across quite a few really nice ones. None of the expensive well-known brands come close IMHO.

$30 for the .375L bottle

Interesting that people are mentioning local vodka. I had no idea there's so much of it out there. I was just at a local event a couple of weeks ago where they featured a locally made vodka. It's made by a chemist at UC Santa Barbara and called RND (gotta love the name!). It is absolutely one of the smoothest vodkas I've ever tasted. I normally use Kettel One or Belvedere (great prices on giant bottles at Costco), but I'm picking up a bottle of this stuff.

I tried some of the extreme high end stuff like Tito's, Stoli, etc.  Aside from being a bit smoother on the palate, I wasn't impressed.  Unless I was going to try and sip it all evening (Definitely not my thing. I'm a beer man) I'd go with the McCormick or Gilbey's.  Same for shots (which I also don't do).  Why spend a buttload of money for something you're just using to get "likkered kwicker".

I like Belvedere because, while smooth, it does actually have a distinct flavor profile due to the rye it's distilled with. On further reflection, though, the best flavored vodka is actually gin. ;) =D

Before I paddle away to sulk, I just watched Alton Brown suggest one can smooth out cheap vodka by running it through a charcoal water filter several times. Interesting.

It can be filtered but is NOT decent enough for shots, not as the OP was wanting at least.

The filtering does help quite a bit for mixed drinks.

I've recetly enjoyed a bottle of Russian vodka called Red Army vodka that I got from my BIL.

http://www.tastings.com/scout_spirits.lasso?id=176319

When I was in the Army back in the 80's, we all learned to drink vodka straight-up, on ice.  Sometimes with a twist.  The shape of teh bottle is a plus.
