Laser FTW

US Navy shoots down target drone over water with laser weapon:

Yeah, screw sharks.  The Navy is arming SHIPS with lasers...

(Yeah, I know, not quite yet, but this is a big step towards ship based laser weapons)

That's much better than relying on CIWS weapons that fire bullets.  Though it still took quite a bit of time to actually destroy the drone.  I wonder how it would fare on a cruise missile.  And I wonder if the tracking software is up to the challenge of dealing with cruise missiles as well.

And of course, what if the ship gets attacked in the rain or fog?

My guess is that it was more a demonstration of the fire control system than that of the laser. The final result may well be much more powerful. Also, anti-ship missiles move faster, smaller wings or control surfaces, have lots of critical electronics, and it takes a lot less to destabilize them as compared to what's really just an overgrown RC plane.

And as to rain or fog, I think the plan is to mount these with the rotary cannon side-by-side.

The article I read said that the plan is to mount in on the Phalanx installation.

Every now and then it hits me...

LASERS!

I've read the tech articles on military lasers for years. They've shot down drones with them as early as the 70's or the early 80's. But damn... One of those moments where the future creeps up on you unless you take a moment to step back and really think about it.  [tinfoil]

I think it will still be a long time before we see lasers in use anywhere other than mounted on floating nuclear reactors.

Just noticed that a mod changed my signature. How long ago was that?

Either way it seems like one those moments that shows that laser tech is advancing.

I agree on missiles having all their sensors in the nose, but I am curious if some counter measures can reduce the effect.
