Expanding the family! New little girl.
« on: February 13, 2010, 09:08:01 PM »
We decided to expand the family today.  Meet the newest of the Shooter Clan.  Her name is Chelsea.  She fits right in already.  Her ears stand at attention and the tail keeps a waggin'.

Good on ya!  Chelsea looks like a sweetie.

When people ask us why we have 3 dogs, the answer is "because the city won't allow us to have more."

As far as I know, there is no limit by law.  We can have all we can afford.  It takes some doing to keep The Treat Lady from bringing home the whole humane society.  I wonder if we should foster some dogs for them.

Cute dog. :) I hope she has settled in nicely.

How old is she?

Rescue...?

6 months old.  Just before Christmas a couple of folks dropped off moms and pups at the local humane society.  There were quite a few young dogs, which is unusual for up here in the Mntns.  They try to get them adopted quickly, but with the down economy it has been hard.  I cruise the websites of the societies up here just to keep up on what is happening.  We went over yesterday and Chelsea spotted us coming toward the outdoor pens and put on quite a show with ears and tail up and talking like crazy to us.  We went inside and every time I went out the side door she saw me and put on the same show, wagging on both ends like Cocoa does.

They are smart enough up here to let them be adopted for a fair price.  In the Valley they want around $140 for a stray or cast off.  Seems to me they are shooting themselves in the foot that way.  She came with all shots, neutered, chipped (which I don't like, but done is done) 30 day health guarantee and follow up visit for $35.

She is already playing with the other pups and licking Bear's face (much to his disgust) and generally fitting right in.  Once she gets the sitting for treats and the potty is outdoors down pat, she will be fine.  I expect The Treat Lady will spoil her rotten like me and the others, but hey, she is GOOD at it. =D

And doesn't that make all the difference.

Several years ago, the wifey and I went to the shelter to fill a space in our group.  One had recently crossed the rainbow bridge, which meant it was time to take in another.  The director at the shelter was getting to know us pretty welll, and when she saw us there she told us she had the perfect dog for us.  This dog had been adopted the day before, and brought back that morning because she "didn't get along" with the woman's other dog.  We took her home at no charge (since her adoption fee had been paid the day before by the other woman) and she is here today.  One great dog!  At the moment, she's curled up on the bed next to me as I browse the forums on the laptop.  She has fit in beautifully with the other dogs, except once in a while she grumbles.  No snaps, no bites... just a grumble.  So, she has picked up the nickname "The Grinch."

Points being:
It's good to know the people at the shelter
A fair adoption fee is good for the dogs
Give the dog a chance.  The old lady heard a grumble and took a great dog back.

Oh, that's her picture below my name (as of this date).
So again, GS, very well done.  I like the way you and The Treat Lady roll!  =)

What a cutie!

We fostered two pups from the Brevard County FL Humane Society during the hurricanes of 2004.

Funny thing is, they never called us when the fostering period was up, and we never called them, either.

5+ years later, and I doubt they're gonna call us wanting the pups back.   =D

It was mayhem when Hurricanes Jeanne, Frances, Charlie, and Ivan tore through Florida - displaced dogs were literally being dumped at the Humane Society's door.  They were probably glad just to find places for them, honestly.

The really funny thing was, we went to the Humane Society to find another cat to replace my late Maine Coon - and came home with two dogs instead.   :O
