Deskjet printer, MAC Airport router, netbook PC, no print
« on: February 10, 2010, 10:23:33 PM »
Trying to set up a printer on an Apple Airport wireless rounter.  Printer is a DeskJet 2660.  The printer is installed and functions properly when plugged into the computer (and ASUS netbook).  Problem comes up when the printer is plugged into the Airport router. Another computer, a MAC, is setup on the same router and the printer is functioning.  The netbook, however, won't.  I'm on the computer now, network and internet connection on the same Airport are functioning normally.  Just no printer communication.

I know bare know enouhg about Macs to spell the name properly.  Any of you Mac gurus have a suggestion?

I don't know how the airport works, but maybe you need Bonjour network services in stalled on the PC?  I tried sharing a printer from a Mac box once.  The PC could see the shared printer, but absolutely would not print to it.

Printer is plugged into the Airport via ethernet and a raw TCP/IP print port?

Or, printer is plugged into the Airport via USB and the Airport is acting as print server?  Which one?

Also... is the MAC computer plugged into the RJ-45 interfaces on the Airport, while you are connected wireless?

The Airport may have wireless network isolation enabled.  Wireless clients cannot see hard-wired clients as a security measure.  You will need to turn that off if that is the case.

I have no clue.  But if the issue isn't resolved by tomorrow, I can ask my spouse to weigh in, he handles our networking stuff.  We also have a mac/pc wireless/hard-wired network on an airport that we have used with several different printers, so the man should have ideas.  Sadly, he's already gone to bed.

snow leopard killed appletalk as a network protocal

what I do is share the printer on the machine that sees the device

the rest of the network connects to it over bonjour

use the Print & Fax control panel

Printer is plugged into the USB port on the AirPort.

The Mac is on the same wireless network (via the AirPort) as the Asus netbook.  Mac prints.  Asus doesn't (doesn't even see the printer at all).  Would the network isolation function allow one machine to work and another not?

I'm curious to know how one sets this up, too.

My sister's printer is attached to her iMac, which shares an 802.11b network via AirPort card with a Dell Dimension desktop machine and a Dell Inspiron notebook, both running XP Pro.

I'd like the Dell/WinXP machines to be able to use the iMac's printer.

This is how I would have gut-instinct configured it based on your described config...

Create a "local printer" TCP/IP print port using a generic HP JetDirect driver.  Put in the IP address of the AirPort and hope that the Airport uses the same default protocol setup as a JetDirect.

Well, the ASUS is running XP so that might well do the trick.  I'll try it when I see them tomorrow.  Thanks!

Got it.

It was as simple as installing Bonjour for Windows.  Be sure to let it set up a desktop shortcut or you won't be able to run it (it doesn't set a run command on the start menu).

Installed it, ran the Bonjour Printer Wizard, and it went to working like there was nothing wrong.

Hold that thought.

Gonna step my sister through installation of Bonjour on her two Windoze machines so she can print through her iMac.   =D
