Electric coil potting compound
« on: February 22, 2010, 01:07:00 AM »
Does anyone have any recommendations for a potting compound to be used on electrical coils?  (IE: solenoids, motor windings, transformers).  I have a request out for more information on a transformer varnish that's sold in small quantities, but I haven't heard anything back.  =|  I figured someone here might know something about the topic.

Thanks!

Avoid this.

How tough do you need it to be?  I've used liquid electrical tape, or hot glue if I didn't have a problem with the inevitable lumps.

I looked under "varnish" in the Grainger catalog and they may have something you can use.

That's what I'm looking for, Jim.

I just got off the phone with Motion Industries.  They stock the product and sell to the general public.  Think I'll run up there over lunch.  =)

I've called a ton of suppliers around town.  Thus far all of them either only sell a case of 12, or don't sell to the general public.  I'll give Bernie Electric a call too.

Thanks!

Heh.  I actually rewound a microwave oven transformer to have a secondary output of 90VAC no load.  It's a little high (75-80v is closer to ideal), but I got carried away with windings.  Should still work fine for what I need it to, though.

It's going in a home built EDM machine.

I'll show off some pics when I finish it.  ;)

An electronic discharge machining machine? Will you machine with it? Perhaps machine another machine with your electronic discharge machining machine.

Anyway, neat project. You'd BETTER share!  ;)

I hope you have all of the wire you need. I didn't even think to ask before I took 200 pounds into the recycler this morning.

I still have two 55 gallon drums to go through yet.

I'm trying to get these buildings cleaned out so I have some room to work.

Damn, I just took copper to the recycler myself today. No where near 200 lbs though. Looks like you buy the beer!  =D

Don't worry about it. At this point I've had mine, yours and everyone's.

See, you let your copper pile get too big.

I'll never forget the day I demo-d out a huge air handler. 4'X8' duct. Guess what I found when I pulled the insulation off of the duct.  =D
