Need geek translation services
« on: February 28, 2010, 05:49:01 PM »
Can someone explain what these commands do?  They are to be run from within the Windows Recovery Console (XP), from the C directory (or whatever partition XP is on).

cd system32\drivers

ren atapi.sys atapi.old

expand D:\i386\atapi.sy_
(where D is the optical drive)

I know these commands are supposed to replace a corrupt atapi.sys (a driver?) with a clean version.  So I presume...

The first one opens C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers?

Second one renames atapi.sys to atapi.old?

Third one opens a program that installs atapi from the Windows CD?

I got the instructions from this website:

That is what is does.  The "expand" command expands the compressed atapi.sy_ file from the CD to its proper size, making it functional, and renames it atapi.sys.  This is often done to replace a corrupt or damaged file.
Many files are compressed on the Windows installation cd just to save space.

Ahhh.  I know what you got.  Trojaned file, IRRC.

It's what I might have had, but I did this on all my systems preemptively.  Probably wasted my time.

cd system32\drivers

cd is "change directory." That command takes you into the directory where driver files are stored

Quote
ren atapi.sys atapi.old

ren is "rename," which saves the old atapi.sys files as atapi.old so it won't be overwritten, in case you later want/need to get it back or look at it.

Quote
expand D:\i386\atapi.sy_
(where D is the optical drive)

expands the compressed file atapi.sy_ into a new, uncompressed file atapi.sys
