Having been in the business for 30 years, I've known many, many photographers. Oleg is one of the most prolific I've ever seen.

The clarity of Oleg's pics have always impressed me.

Aside from paying attention to his lighting, he either habitually uses a tripod, or he's learned to keep the camera still when taking the picture.

Just for fun, take a look at amateurs taking snapshots - 4 out of 5 times, when they trip the shutter, you can see them move the whole camera. Do that, and you can forget about getting really sharp pictures.

I found out early on that a good flash and sturdy tripod are not optional.

Well, there's lots of shooting where a tripod just isn't practical, or you won't catch anything. A decent 35 or 50mm lens that gathers lots of light while still allowing a suitably fast shutter speed helps immensely.

Mrs. Dual has become one of the DSLR "prosumers" who are busy undercutting and killing the old professional photography industry that Monkeyleg has described.

http://jwfotography.net/Births/Joey/11286202_VyJgQ#791907594_3qMGg-A-LB From a shoot for a firefighter's family and their newborn son that she just recently did. Plus, with digital you can practice essentialy for free, and get instant feedback if your settings are right. And whatever she can't get with the camera, can be done in Photoshop.

Oleg is in a good spot, the firearm/RKBA community isn't that huge, I've never really seen anyone else who does what he does, and to keep going as a 100% dedicated professional photographer, it seems you need a niche these days.

Correct.  But if you are in a situation where they can be used, a good flash and sturdy tripod are still not optional.  (I used pshaw tripods and flashes, too, but after getting a good flash and sturdy tripod I learned otherwise.)

Flash and tripods are like scopes on rifles. You wind up spending about as much as you do on the body. I've got my eye on a nice carbon fiber Manfrotto tripod for Mrs. Dual that's a couple hundred dollars alone. Her Promaster flash is decidedly middle of the road, but it does the job for now. Next step will be some Alien Bee's for her studio setup.

My studio camera stand wasn't a tripod, it was a 12' stand on wheels. Cost was about $7000.

There were times when I hand held my camera, though, and it required some effort to keep it steady. For some running shots for Buell motorcycles, we rigged a 4" x 8" board to the bottom of a truck about 6" off the pavement for a low angle. My assistants tied me to the board, and then held my legs while we went down the highway at 40-65 mph with me snapping photos of the rider and motorcycle. That was a real adrenaline rush.

I looked at wheeled stands and was suitably impre$$ed. However we'll never need that. As "studio work" for Mrs. Dual just means she takes a backdrop and lighting to the family's home. Few people have a floor surface suitable for rolling such a rig on. Part of the value-added that's getting her family and baby photography work, where they get much more artistic results, and don't have the hassle of trying to wrangle their kids at Sears/JC Penney's or an actual studio.

I promise not to duck.

This is similar to the one I had, but mine had more attachments (low arms, dual gear heads, etc):
