Fake Intel i7 processors
« on: March 06, 2010, 10:45:04 PM »
This is really confusing, and somewhat amusing to me. Apparently people have been getting fake Intel processors. And by fake, I mean a hunk of aluminum molded to the approximate shape of a processor, in a box that is nearly a dead-ringer for a real Intel box. From Newegg.

I can understand fake flash drives on eBay, but fake, $300 processors from Newegg is a whole new level of chinese knockoff.

Maybe a rare occurence, but then you only have to get murdered once to ruin your whole day.

So wait. it's not a lower-quality processor sold as an Intel? It's just an inert box?

Impressive.  Wonder who will end up eating the costs?

Edit:

Intel has their security folks hard at work on it.  Intel has very... proactive anti-counterfeiting folks.  No, I'm not kidding.  They don't off the counterfeiting folks, but they'll do a lot more than most corporate security drones.

300 units were allegedly faked.

DBA Public Relations issued the following statement:

"Newegg is aware of a shipping error that occurred with certain recent orders of the Intel Core i7-920 CPU. After investigating the issue internally it appears one of our long term partners mistakenly shipped a small number of demo boxes instead of functional units. Our customer service team has already begun proactively reaching out to the affected customers. In line with our commitment to ensure total customer satisfaction, we are doing everything in our power to resolve the issue as soon as possible and with the least amount of inconvenience to our customers."

Worst coverup story I've heard to date.

Yes, it's a lower-quality processor sold as an Intel. And by "lower quality processor" I mean a chunk of aluminum comically molded to resemble a computer processor while being nothing but a chunk of aluminum.

Yes, it's a 1-bit processor. Since the chunk of Aluminum is conductive, you could say it was "on" = 1.

They went through a lot of trouble to fake it, whoever they were. Other than the subtle "Engrish" typos on the box text, it's a very good fake. And the fabbing of the fake aluminum chunk with ink-jet printing on it, and the fake heatsink/fan molding cost something. Not to mention four-color offset press box printing.  =|

Edited to add: "Demo boxes"... LOL.
I promise not to duck.

While not fun for those that got 'bitten', this is just hilariously terrible, or terribly hilarious. Silly, silly, silly. But clever too!  =D
