Ballistics Calculator
« on: March 12, 2010, 10:27:59 PM »
Thought this might be of use to some of you shooters. I found myself at the last minute having to sight and verify zero for a couple of my rifles using new ammo versus the reloads I already have them matched to. I also only have access to a short range for sighting, so I was looking for charts for estimating near and far zero for the two rifles (.308 and 7MM mag) with these particular factory loads. While Googling, I happened upon the below linked neato torpedo online ballistics calculator. It has tons of bullets for different cartridges as part of its database and also does neat stuff like calculating zero ranges for various target sizes.

Anyways, thought it might interest some of you. Also if anyone happens to know of a similar calculator that is not web based, I'd be really interested in a heads up. It would be cool to have this on a netbook at the range.

Thanks, I have two versions on my computer but it's like reloading manuals, it's hard to have too many.

There's a lengthy list of ballistics calculator software on Steve's Pages web site. Some are commercial, some are freeware.

I wish I could figure out how to use the $150 software I already bought for this sort of thing! It's the NECO one that goes with QuickLOAD.

A plan is just a list of things that doesn't happen.
Is defenestration possible through the overton window?

Thanks Bedlamite -- and free too! :)

Edit: Forgot to add thanks to Hawkmoon too. I'd never seen Steve's Pages before -- he has a ton of prgs listed!

I have the Oehler Ballistic Explorer, and like it, but often use the utility on the Norma web site for fast experimentation.  Enter mass and ballistic coefficient in the "define your own" option then attack the various sliders.  On-the-fly calculations as you move a slider make for much faster exploration than typing new values and starting over.
Gee, I'd love to see your data!

It doesn't do ballistics, but OnTarget is useful too.
