Courant Staff Report

April 27, 2010

A would-be mugger armed with a knife who tried to a rob a man armed with a handgun was shot Monday afternoon in the city's Wooster Square Park.

"Give me all your money or I'll stab you," the mugger told the man, according to New Haven police Officer Joe Avery.

The suspect backed his intended victim up against a fence, Avery said, then the man pulled a gun and fired.

Police said the 40-year-old suspect was shot in the chest and was in stable condition at Yale New Haven Hospital. Police did not identify him.

The intended victim, a 65-year-old man, who police said was licensed to carry his firearm, was questioned and released. The man, who is not from New Haven, said he was eating his lunch on a park bench when the alleged robber approached him.

Witnesses told police they saw a struggle between the two men then heard shots fired.

The shooting occurred shortly after 1 p.m. near St. Michael's Church on Wooster Place.

I'm so glad he had a license to defend his life and property  ;/

Good job old CT guy! Are carry permits shall issue and readily available in CT? Also, I noted he backed up into a fence: legal "duty to retreat" state?

Yes and yes...but they've been taking their sweet time in certain towns to put them through.
You have to apply at the town level first and get a town permit and then you take that to the stat and they trade you for a state permit. That is an immdediate thing. Once you get the town you go and can immediately get your state permit.

They have reduced the number of places to get or renew your state permit so some of us have to drive quite a ways to get it done. yea, I don't want to shoot anybody but some 40 yo threatening to stab a 65 yo sure does seem to border on "he needed shootin'."

Maybe the other New Haven muggers will think twice now? Maybe if a few more of them get shot.

None of the above came from a newspaper.  I can prove it just from the syntax!

Suspect - referring to the robber.  How dare they!  He's not even an alleged suspect, but an out-and-out suspect.  Obviously convicted in the press before he has a chance for a fair trial.

intended victim - they obviously got the two individuals reversed, as the guy who was shot is always the victim when the guy who was shot was the one committing an allegedly not legal action.

the intended victm was licensed - and not the first word about how the State goes around giving licenses to kill to every old-phart senior citizen who hides his racism behind a phoney fear of crime and personal injury.

Oh teh noes!  Are we going to let the standards of journalism slip?  Gather up your bricks, your La Raza posters, and get the kids to skip school to protest this travesty of reporting.

stay safe.

skidmark - who has not yet decided if he was being sarcastic or not.
If cowardly and dishonorable men sometimes shoot unarmed men with army pistols or guns, the evil must be prevented by the penitentiary and gallows, and not by a general deprivation of a constitutional privilege.

Hey you kids!! Get off my lawn!!!

They keep making this eternal vigilance thing harder and harder.  Protecting the 2nd amendment is like playing PACMAN - there's no pause button so you can go to the bathroom.

OLD!!    ok, you young whippersnappers- hasn't anyone told you that 65 is the new 45?

I hope Mr Mugger has learned his lesson

I was fortunate in that I had a CT non-resident permit first, then when I moved here I had it converted to a resident permit.  I never had to deal with a town or city, and the "conversion" was simply to send DPS a change of address.

As for the permit holder in the story, I hope he doesn't run into any hassles down the road.

Yup, civil action sure could spring it's ugly head. We'll have to wait and see. From the film clips I've seen it appears the attacker was white with lotsa tattoos.

I take it CT does not have statutes preventing civil action against a self defense shooting ruled justified?

I'm thinking not because my CCW instructor guy said firing your weapon in self defense in this state costs you an automatic $50,000 in laywers etc. but I'd have to look into it further to confirm that that is the correct answer to that one.
