Breaking Bad
« on: June 25, 2010, 10:09:21 PM »
NO SPOILER ALERT!  I WILL DISCUSS NO SPOILERS IN THIS FIRST POST.  NO PROMISES ON SUBSEQUENT POSTS.
Just finished watching the 1st season DVDs I borrowed from a buddy.

Most folks had described it as black comedy, a genre I appreciate.

Personally, I don't think it is black comedy, as they play it pretty straight.  True, some of the situations are tragicomic, but that is different.  Also, there does seem to be a sense that actions will have consequences.

The vibe I get from it is more Janis Joplin:
"Freedom's just another word for nothin' left to lose..."

Dude has a family, but his time on this Earth is so short that his imminent death has let slip the bonds of law from his calculations.  He is free, for a time.

Oddly enough, I find the DEA agent BIL to be hands-down the most sympathetic character, despite his rough humor.

I find I like it, but would never have my wife watch it, as it is too bleak and corrosive for her tastes.

I dunno, I found the interplay between Jessie and Badger when they try their first cook sans Walter pretty darn funny.

Then in a later episode...

"What's your name?"

"Heisenberg"

Do keep watching, it even better & at times weirder.  I'm counting the isotope decay clicks until the next season start.  =D

This is an excellent TV series.
One thing I thought was cool was I had recently picked up the Tremors TV series and lo and behold, the guy who plays the DEA agent in Breaking Bad also played a government agent in Tremors,

OK, I think I'm done with it.

Got about midway through season two.

BB is not black comedy, which usually contains some bit of the absurd to signal, "Black Comedy In Process."

BB, outside of the absurd notion of a terminally ill chemistry teacher cooking meth, is played straight and left the laughs in the first episode.

The situations are played too straight and lack comic relief.  Oh, I guess if one revels in the misery of the miserable, it might be funny in a "Heh, look at that dumbass tweaker eat dogshiite for money," sort of Morgan Spurlock sociopathy.

Glad I borrowed & didn't buy the DVDs.

I thought the second season was even better than the first.

I agree, I love the series.  Bummed that I'm through the season finale for this year.  Good cliffhanger.
