Manchester, CT shootings...
« on: August 04, 2010, 08:26:57 AM »
Kind of surprised noone has posted this yet. Yup, that's my neck of the woods. So far I don't recognize any of the names they've released. I do know other BIL works the dock in a building facing their dock across the street, he heard shots and saw the people scrambling for their lives and hiding in the grass. He came out fairly traumatized even though he wasn't that close to it. He was shot accidentally when he was a kid and has the fear as it is so this was not a good thing for him either.

It was being discussed on THR(.us), which seems to be off-line this morning.

As expected, his family are playing the race card, claiming he was being subjected to racial discrimination. As if that's a valid reason for stealing from your employer. But ... he filed NO complaints. Not with the EEOC, not with the police, and not with his union. Two of the people he shot were the union reps who were trying to save his job.

I guess they didn't try hard enough.

One report said he had a pistol permit, so expect the antis to be all over this one. They've been in dire need of a case of a permit holder going postal, so they must be salivating about this incident.

I do wonder why it was the cops that had to shoot him.

The shooter occasionally delivered beer to the AAFES and O-club on my base.  Kinda weird knowing I searched his truck a few times over the past few years.  You get stuff like this and Ford Hood and people still wonder why security has to be so tight.  It used to be that every civilian vehicle used to get searched (not just commercial vehicles) and it would be fine with me if we put that policy back into place, even though it would mean more work for me.

Because the line out the front gate before PT wouldn't be RIDICULOUS if we searched every vehicle coming in.  And the cursory "open your doors and pop your trunk" search would catch every guy with a gun in the bottom of his duffel bag.

I didn't mean to imply that it would create a foolproof system.  However, I was only referring to visitors and contractors, not base personnel with Common Access Cards.  I also probably work at a much smaller base than you, where this policy wouldn't be impossible or impractical to implement.

All I know is I watched roach coach after roach coach entering at will through the gates of a base I visited a while back. I thought, hmph, you could pack an awful lot of explosives into those trucks if you wanted to.  =|

They do, but it's a delayed reaction  ;)

Catering trucks and livery vehicles are prohibited from my base, FWIW.

Just had a pizza delivered at Wright Pat air base last weekend. The gate security/sky cops requested a phone call to the gate in advance.

I wonder if there is any d.o.d. mechanism for getting security clearances for base visitors/vendors.  For owner/operators of roach coaches, I could see it being worthwhile.

There is a roach coach that shows up (and is much appreciated) at the ranges at Devens Reserve Training Area (formerly Fort Devens).  As for my base, all contractors are vetted by civil engineering via an "affidavit" system, which includes a background check.

Oh yea, the arrival of the roach coach was always cause for celebration when I was in.  [popcorn]
