I got the bowling reference, too, but have always thought it came from cartoons.

I said,

I remember reading in an old book about the legend that thunder was billions of coulombs bouncing around between the clouds and striking sparks whenever they hit a cloud. 

And every once in a while a billion or so coulombs would fall out of the clouds in a big clump and make a really loud bang and a biiiig spark when they hit the ground.

That's the legend that I read in an old book.
