pilot clanks when he walks nice job navy
« on: August 19, 2010, 03:29:29 PM »
It is much more powerful to seek Truth for one's self.  Seeing and hearing that others seem to have found it can be a motivation.  With me, I was drawn because of much error and bad judgment on my part. Confronting one's own errors and bad judgment is a very life altering situation.  Confronting the errors and bad judgment of others is usually hypocrisy.

bet you a 100 bucks to a donut that if interviewed he says it was just doing his job and talks about how great his crew is.  and that the crew does the same.  they all will talk about how glad they are the girl is ok.the real deal is like that.

I watched the video taken from the bridge, showing the USN Seahawk hovering pretty much right below the bridge. I thought at the time that if the person dropped the camera by accident, he would have taken out the rotor disk.  Amazing bit of flying, even with station-keeping software in the flight control computer.

I can't even control a helicopter that smoothly in a videogame, let alone in real life, in those conditions.  =D

Respectfully to pilots, no human really could a couple decades ago.  Technology greatly helps improve the stability of Sikorsky SAR configured helicopters.

The tech was designed for the US government, but got released.  Yet another gift from the US to the world that the US will never get credit for.  Cromlech, your country has especially benefited from said tech.  We're outfitting all of your country's SAR helos with it.

Is it something that our Apaches already came with, or are they too being fitted with it now?

Either way:

Edited - I had to look up what SAR stood for, and I guess search and rescue doesn't apply to Apaches, so ignore my post  =D

This has not at all been a Sikorsky ad.  =D

Saw that video yesterday.  That was one tight piece of flying.  Bravo Zulu indeed.

Na, na.  If it was a Sikorsky ad, I'd be bragging that our company just stomped the British on the world speed record for helicopters.

Rev, that was a coupled hover, right? It looked so rock-steady to me that it had to be a computer and not a human at the controls.

Ayep.  Virtually no one outside the aviation industry knows that, so pilots get to humbly brag about their skills in the middle of a daring rescue when they're really just keeping an eye on the sensors to make sure the computer is doing what it supposed to be doing.  Which it always is, unless the pilots hit the wrong button, ignored the manual or is doing something very unwise.  Then everyone dies.  We're working on AI to correct that problem (ie pilots).

It's even more cool to watch out at sea in the middle of a storm.  We can actually tether the helicopter's positioning controller to the motion of the boat being rescued.  Keeps the rescue line really steady in relational spacing.

That could really be handy if you wanted to get a CIA agent onto a nuclear attack sub in the middle of the North Atlantic  ;)

Actually, yes.  That is now pretty trivial from a technology perspective.

When it goes rogue, let's make sure its secret program involves wiping out North Korea.

Computer control or not, that still takes a lot of guts, and they should all be thanked with several of the adult beverages of their choice for that.
