Grandmother shoots intruder, but that's not the big story
« on: August 31, 2010, 11:10:46 PM »
Here in Decatur, a 69 year-old grandmother yesterday shot an intruder. That's the good news, but to me the story is really a couple of things.

First is that she obviously hasn't shot her self defense gun in years, yet, out of three shots fired, at least one hit home.

The second thing that struck me is the article itself. There's no quote from a police talking head about how "things could have gone badly" or "she's lucky he didn't take the gun from her". After reading that sort of pablum in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel for so many years, the lack of it really stuck out.

The story is here.

I saw this in the printed version of the D.D.
A good story --  glad this lady had a gun and the gumpshin' to use it!

Is that what folks around here are called, Decaturites? I'm guess I'm a rookie Decaturite. ;)

Another thing that was so different about the story was the photo. They ran a huge photo of her posed with her gun in hand behind a broken window. They were making her a heroine rather than depicting her as a weirdo, which is what my old home town paper would have done.

Hoorah for Grandma, she's got some starch in her all right. Also glad the local news wasn't out with the torches and pitchforks trying to demonize her, very refreshing.

I don't know if we're "Decaturites."  It sounded better than "Decaturians."
Saw the photo too.  I was surprised at the tenor of the article, the D.D. has expressed antigun sentiments in it's editorial pages before.

Hopefully the paper has seen the light, or at least found it harder to focus foot-stomping blissninny ire on Grandma.

It gets better. The newspaper did a follow-up story on the increasing number of women buying guns for defense. Very unbiased--or maybe even pro gun biased--story. Even the DA couldn't find anything but good things to say.

I love the South!!!!!!!
