Sometimes you can find Shasta sods in 3 liter bottles.  They are very sturdy.

Test the bottles with some dry ice chips and water to find their burst point. >:D

Shasta! Hm.  The larger 3l bottle might indeed be sturdier because the same pressure in a larger bottle would seem to require thicker walls.  I think.  Where's my Machinery's Handbook?

Thank you, scanr.

They make them in blue for diesel, yes.

Diesel cans should be yellow.  Blue is for kerosene.  Potable water jugs also tend to be blue.  One would hope that the user can tell the difference between water and kerosene.

I kept one of the WalMart 5gal plastic jerrycan type containers on the porch at the old house for a long time, and it never cracked from freezing.  The shape has a definite advantage when you're storing it, though the 7.5 gallon water cube they carry is also pretty good, and has a spout so you can refill smaller containers without having to lift it.

Generally for the Blazer, I just carry a case or two of the cheapest 1L or similar size bottled water in the rear floorboard.  It would take a while to fill the radiator, but it's a lot more practical if I just want a drink or end up on foot and want to carry a couple bottles rather than a gallon jug.  In my wife's car, I keep three full military canteens, a carrier, enough Chlor-Floc tablets to refill the canteens twice, and an empty collapsible 2gal jug.

It's tricky with some city water systems...   =(

(Oil well drilling and pumping operations let flammables seep into water supply.  The fumes could be ignited as water came out of the faucets.)

Good point about the 1l boittles.  Actually, I keep both sizes on my balcony.  My main concern with freezing and bursting would be in my car, which happened with a forgotten bottle of water once in my trunk  --no guns in there at the time.  But it was with an (I think) Aquafina bottle, very thin and fragile.  On my balcony, who cares?  It just dribbles down to the ground below.

Squeeze the bottles in the store; since it's not carbonated, you can usually find a brand that has quite a bit of flex to the filled bottles.  Maybe not enough to handle freezing solid, but in a vehicle cabin it shouldn't really get that solid unless you're leaving the car for a couple of days in Minnesota.

Store a large quantity of liquid in these compact, durable, impact and dent-resistant, rustproof, economical and reusable do-it-alls. An integral handle and lightweight construction make them easy to carry while a notched bottom makes them easy to stack. Heavy-Duty Jerrycans are constructed of Quoral® BR, a barrier resin which provides an oxygen and solvent barrier that is 5 times better than fluorination. BARITAINER® packaging can be used for products containing solvents, such as household and industrial chemicals, cleaning agents and adhesives, as well as for flavors and fragrances in the food and cosmetics industries, additives in the automotive sector, photochemicals and agrochemicals, etc. BARITAINER® packaging is therefore an attractive and also environmentally sound alternative to glass and metal containers. It can also replace coextruded or fluorinated containers and other materials with single-layer barriers such as Barex, polyester, and PVC. Heavy-duty cans are white in color and feature a black, tamper-evident, polyethylene cap (a clear dust cap is provided to push into the opening of can to protect contents between frequent use).
