New scam department?
« on: October 05, 2010, 12:27:49 PM »
Is there a new phone scam going around that I haven't heard of yet? Twice today (and it's only just past noon) the home office line has rung, and both calls were from people speaking in barely intelligible "English" about the form I (allegedly) submitted about diabetes.

I'm not diabetic, my wife isn't diabetic, our toy poodle isn't diabetic, and nobody submitted any forms to anyone. WTF?

An old lady I know got took for $2,000 the other day. It was a variation of the "Hi I'm your grandson in a far off place, I've been in a accident and have no insurance and they won't let me out of jail unless you wire the money NOW." scam.

Hey!  At least it was not one of those phoney collection agencies saying you owed somebody money from 10 years ago, and offering to settle for any fraction they can get out of you.

Did you capture the caller's number?

I got one the other day which I picked up on and caught the tail 3-second end of something in spanish.

Caller ID showed:

(573) 942-8989

Google showed:

One hit shows:
http://www.callwiki.com/phones/view/573-942-8989

Costs me a buck for my daily access fee for each call and so far they've called twice.

I did not call back because I do not know enough spanish curse words.

Now I gotta get into my cell phone instruction book to see if I can block a number.  Aparently, being on a no-call list does no good.

I've been getting these "political poll" calls.  No option to opt out, and its a voice prompted call.
Election Poll, 2010
Question one...are you planning on voting in the upcoming election?

My gut says its bull, so I hang up immediately. Best I figure, they want my voice on the recording saying "yes". Then, when I say yes, they slam my phone service or something similar.
