camera cases and assorted gear
« on: October 20, 2010, 10:06:03 PM »
i have been hunting for a new camera case for a little over six months now, and decided it was time to ask for some input from someone else's vantage point.

i have been going back and forth on getting a pelican case, or something like this. for carrying everything/leaving in the car.

and something like this, or this. for carrying a camera body, 2 lenses(one mounted), and a flash, to where i am actually hoping to take some pictures. =D

basically i'm trying to say, "has any body had a Naneu, or Kata bag?" and "if so, how did it/they hold up?". oh and "any other suggestions?"

thank you for reading my gibberish.

the thing that makes this hard is, i have the portrait grip and would like to be able to carry the camera with it attached. [tinfoil]

P.S. anybody have any experience with metz flashes? the 58 AF-2(or 58 AF-1) in particular.

Paging Monkeyleg.

Dick please pick up the White Courtesy Phone in the camera aisle.

Hold fast by the river.

I was primarily a studio photographer. My location gear was a jumble of boxes and cases not suited to the job.

The location photographers I knew used a lot of the heavy plastic cases with dividers, or with foam cutouts. The photographers with a lot of money used the heavy aluminum cases with foam cutouts. Some of the cases cost more than they gear inside.

The problem with bags is that something you need is always buried. Having a suitcase-style case with dividers keeps everything organized. That's important when you're on the clock and the client is watching the clock.

On a couple of my canoe trips I've kept my DSLR in a Pelican case. The thing is like mentioned above, bombproof. It is just as waterproof as advertised also, don't ask me how I know, lol.
For the invisible things of him since the creation of the world are clearly seen, being perceived through the things that are made, even his everlasting power and divinity, that they may be without excuse. Because knowing God, they didn’t glorify him as God, and didn’t give thanks, but became vain in their reasoning, and their senseless heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools.

Monkeyleg, if you haven't tried a holster case yet, you need to. not for carrying to/from a shoot, but for carrying around with family/friends. depending on size you can fit 2 smaller lenses into the case(one mounted and one in front/below the first) mine came with a padded divider.(walmart cheapie [but it served it's purpose well{letting me know if i like the case type}]) best 15 bucks i've spent in a while. =D

Harold, crumpler has one just about like the sharia. but, it's way beyond my price range. bet it would last decades though.

the only real downside i can see to the pelican case is the fact that i suck at tearing the foam out, and i can already see it flying through my car. [tinfoil]

thanks for taking the time to reply, if i end up getting anything really good(of really bad for that matter) that no one else has tried yet, i'll post pics. =D
probably end up with the pelican unless i just can't get rid of the flying camera case image stuck in my head.

I really don't have any camera equipment left for which to buy a case. I just bought a new tripod for my camcorder, but that was only because the Leitz Tilt-All tripod my wife bought me for Christmas in 1974 was stolen by an employee of The Shooters Shop in Milwaukee.

If I'm understanding you correctly, you're saying that you don't do a good job of cutting the foam for cases. Is that right? If so, mark the foam with a pencil for your cutouts , then put the foam in the freezer until it's frozen. Use a good sharp knife to cut.
