Household Cable/Internet System
« on: December 07, 2010, 10:26:25 AM »
Hey y'all ... my wife and I are building a house.  We'd like to have a fairly modern cable and internet system installed but I'm not really up on how or what to do ... like to be able to stream video to several different TV's in the house and at the same time have cable hooked up at each TV ... I have three older CPU's I'd like to continue to use if possible ... we plan on a wireless router in the house to run a laptop or two, would be nice if someone could share some advice (in senior citizen, laymen's terms) on what wiring and outlets we need to request our builder to put in ... thank you very much ... at this point we have a cable outlet in all rooms that would normally have it (bedrooms, family room, living room) ... do we need to request a separate line for cable internet ?  Have cable internet and TV now and like the service ...

Thanks for any and all input ...  [popcorn]

I'd have your DSL/cable/fios router in one central location, and have it connected to a gigabit ethernet switch, which in turn goes to an ethernet jack in every room in your house.

Run conduit from every location you might want something either to the attic or basement. That way its easy to add new or other cables to the location. Don't chince out either, if you have the space use 1" at least.

This.  The installer would know what jacks to use and such. Run conduit so you can upgrade/repair later on.

Make sure to leave a strong nylon string in each conduit to pull new cable in the future.

I would pull 1 coax, 2 CAT6 cables and maybe glass to each room

Including baths, kitchen, garage/shop, laundry, mud room...  Think ahead by decades here.

Put money into conduit.  Plan well and it will pay off for years.

Last house I lived in up North in MN, I wound up buying and installing a 16 port low loss splitter for the cable TV. It wasn't very expensive. We had ethernet & RG6 run to each room. If you're in a metro area, anywhere NEAR TV or radio stations, use quad shield RG6 for the cable TV. I had a four port router and two 4 port switches hooked into my network plus wireless. (never cared for wireless as I always seemed to experience slower connection speeds)
