Apparently, they failed to notify people at campsite that a bear had wrecked the campsite that day.

I remember the case but I'm not sure if they were allowed to have guns and if the boys dad was armed

So long as it wasn't a National Park; guns are allowed at any public camping ground in Utah.

From the cited article:
Quote
The court found the campground where the attack took place was on U.S. Forest Service land, and the Forest Service, not the state, was responsible for issuing camping permits and closing the campground as needed.

Depending on several agreements between USFS and the state game & fisheries folks firearms may or may not be allowed in certain parts depending on certain hunting seasons currently open.  It makes one of those 3,000-piece jigsaw puzzles look easy.

stay safe.
If cowardly and dishonorable men sometimes shoot unarmed men with army pistols or guns, the evil must be prevented by the penitentiary and gallows, and not by a general deprivation of a constitutional privilege.

Hey you kids!! Get off my lawn!!!

They keep making this eternal vigilance thing harder and harder.  Protecting the 2nd amendment is like playing PACMAN - there's no pause button so you can go to the bathroom.

However, the act requires an agency to have the authority to make such decisions in order to claim immunity. Therefore, the state could not claim immunity for its failure to warn the Ives family about the bear.

The [non]logic... it hurts.

"Because our State does not have a bureaucracy that has tasked itself with bear-safety decisions, we can therefore be sued for not making bear-safety decisions.  Despite the fact that this is a Federal-managed forest site and there are Federal employees (that could be) tasked with bear-safety decisions."
"But whether the Constitution really be one thing, or another, this much is certain - that it has either authorized such a government as we have had, or has been powerless to prevent it. In either case, it is unfit to exist."

Ah, didn't think about hunting seasons. The couple times I've called about guns in USFS land (backpacking), they've just always said they follow the state gun laws.
