More computer questions
« on: January 24, 2011, 12:31:14 PM »
Before I switched over to a DSL line for Internet, I used my dial-up modem connection not only for Internet access but also to send faxes directly out of Microsoft Word and Excel. With the DSL line and a new computer that doesn't have a modem, I find myself missing that capability.

Is there any way to send faxes directly out of Word when using a DSL connection?

You can actually go one better.  If you have office 2007 you can send the document as a PDF directly from your desktop.  No loss of resolution.

If you have 2003 there are a couple of freeware apps that will allow you to print to a PDF converter.

I have one, ("CutePDF," I think) installed. That's the work-around I've been using, but I was hoping for resuscitating the direct fax approach because it automatically created the cover sheet.

You can email a PDF, but if you have a faxmodem plugged into a "telephone" line, you can use that. And there are outfits such as ringcentral that have remote/internet fax sending/receiving capabilities... With Synergicare, our incoming fax was via ringcentral.

My old computer had a faxmodem, and I had to add a network card when I moved to DSL. The new computer doesn't have any modem, just a network card. And the new motherboard doesn't accept cards from the old computer.

Sounds like .PDFs is the only route available with the current setup.
