Obama: "The Gipper?" More like "The Gimper."
« on: February 12, 2011, 03:26:05 PM »
http://www.realclearpolitics.com/video/2011/02/11/obama_refers_to_himself_as_the_gipper_in_farewell_to_gibbs.html

While recounting a stupid anecdote about ties, Obama refers to himself as "The Gipper."

Why is he trying to stinking hard to compare himself to Reagan, when he's done NOTHING like Reagan whatsoever?

For those of you who don't know why Reagan is often called "The Gipper":

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Gipp

George Gipp was a Notre Dame football player.  He died of strep in the hospital right after giving Notre Dame a victory on the field.

Quote from: George Gipp, his last words supposedly
I've got to go, Rock. It's all right. I'm not afraid. Some time, Rock, when the team is up against it, when things are wrong and the breaks are beating the boys, ask them to go in there with all they've got and win just one for the Gipper. I don't know where I'll be then, Rock. But I'll know about it, and I'll be happy.

Reagan played Gipp in a 1940 movie about the athlete.  He uttered those lines on the silver screen.  He has a claim to the nickname through theatrical association.

Obama calling himself "The Gipper" has about as much merit as me calling myself "Emperor." ;/

I see the problem. You're trying to apply logic. That doesn't work with politicians.

I've noticed that recently, there is a large push, seemingly trying to appear as a grassroots movement, to identify Democrats in general, and Obama in specific, with Reagan and his actions/policies. It's disturbing how far they must stretch logic to try to make the comparison, but what is of note is that all the "small" blogs and such are worded exactly the same in terms of talking points. Too specific to be different authors.

Astroturf blogging.

My former employer hired an external agency to boost the company's presence for certain key words on Google.  They employed astroturf blogging to accomplish it.

Wow, he really is kind of dense, isn't he?  It sounds like he meant to say, take one for the team.  So, not only is he conceited enough to think of himself as The Gipper, he's also not smart enough to get his saying right.

It's really easy, Barry.  Win one for the Gipper.  Take one for the team.  Two different things that are not interchangeable.
Oh, Lord, please let me be as sanctimonious and self-righteous as those around me, so that I may fit in.

Maybe not, his resignation would do both.

If you call yourself Emperor, maybe the New Gipper will bow to you . . .

HankB just won the thread.

You may commence bowing.

My bowing is done facing backwards, with my pants down.  To show respect. =D
