King County DA Says Change the Law
« on: February 17, 2011, 06:34:22 PM »

At the risk of once again being accused of being "factually challenged,"  I'm posting a link to a follow-up where the King County WA prosecutor explained that Washington State law prohibits him from going forward with charges against the officer.

Quote
Woodcarver shooting aftermath: Change the law, don’t crucify prosecutor

King County Prosecutor Dan Satterberg yesterday stepped up to the plate as too few public officials would and explained matter-of-factly that under current state statute, his office could not prosecute a Seattle police officer for shooting a woodcarver last August.

Public reaction has been largely negative, but a careful reading of RCW 9A.16.040, as this column quoted yesterday, left Satterberg no option.

You're writing your posts up in Word then cut and pasting them aren't you? I was wondering what was with all the weird size/font/formatting issues with your posts, then I saw the bullet points on this one and realized what was going on...

  • I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that.

this is the first I've heard of this case, what happened? Was the guy "impaired" or not?
The cops just up and shot him or did they tell him to "drop the knife" and he didn't want to damage an expensive woodcarving blade?

Why are people upset?
Politicians and bureaucrats are considered productive if they swarm the populace like a plague of locust, devouring all substance in their path and leaving a swath of destruction like a firestorm. The technical term is "bipartisanship".

ok, saw the vid and the other thread.
Doesn't seem entirely justified but doesn't seem prosecutable either.

IMO the cop put himself into a dangerous situation unnecessarily, he got  within the 21 ft space the Tueller drill
recommends you avoid.

The cop should have used the bullhorn and not gotten out of the car.

The last time I was in Seattle ( 1986) I did feel that the cops were kind of heavy handed.

But I really dislike the entitled street culture too.

At the risk of once again being accused of being "factually challenged,"...

Eh, it happens. We're all factually-challenged now and then, and sometimes we call each other on it.
