Austin, TX
« on: February 22, 2011, 09:39:35 AM »
A friend of mine just took a job down there (company rhymes with Hamhung), and needs to know where to look for a house.   Good schools (he has middle and elementary school aged kids), or if none then recommendation for private schools.   I don't have a price range, but figure he can sell his house up here for $250,000ish.

Also if anyone knows a good realtor in the Austin area, he'd prefer to work with someone that comes with a recommendation.

Scout,

PM me his particulars.  I have a guy up there who is a CHL instructor and realtor.  I spent several hours hanging out with him at the TexasCHL forum shoot here in Pearland last Oct and communicate with him frequently.  Great guy.

God i wish i could get back to Austin.

Depending on where the job is, I like both Round Rock and Leander.

Best to stay out of the city proper, pay attention to commute, and beware of neighborhood associations with large fees.

Decent suburbs include Round Rock, Cedar Park, and Lakeway, but of the three Round Rock is closest to Samsung. (Why the obfuscation?)

A bit further north is Georgetown, but it's practically a straight shot down I-35 to the Samsung plants.

Most of the development (and more expensive real estate) is north and west. Better values, and older, arguably more dangerous, neighborhoods are east and south. Trafiic can be a challenge with IH35 as the primary arterial with some new loop options/tollways.

Looks like the Hamhung facility is north in/near Pflugerville, so I'd suggest focusing on that area or east around 290. That's a nice area with Bastrop and state parks further east.

Hwy 183 on the West side of Austin is no fun either during "rush" hours.

(Why the obfuscation?)

I just ran into him this morning and our conversation was brief, so I didn't ask him if I could name the company.   All he said was that he got a job offer down there, to which I replied that I thought I might someone people down and get him whatever info I could.

He's also not really a gun guy.

That's what I told him, take some of his transfer money and buy a BBQ gun.  =D
