power company program question

they have a deal where they mount a gadget on your central air unit that on some high demand days will cut it out for periods of time.  its free for me they actually send  me a check for enrolling.  anyone had and experience with this? its th ekinda energy saving i don't mind doing but its dominion power so i don't totally trust them

it used to be called vepco

and we had bumper stickers that said  "welcome to virginia, owned and operated by vepco"

Yeah, I've got one of those for the past three or four years, and it's never been actually set off by the power co as of yet.

Main problem is that whenever I've got to do some condenser work, and flip the breaker, such as replacing a rusted out start/kick over capacitor, or waggle the re-lay to un-stick it from the previous winter's detritus, it takes about 30 minutes for the darn box to reset itself, and communicate with the power co. that it's allowed to turn on.

Otherwise, it's been fine.

I've also got one.  Not because I'm a tree-hugger, but because I'm a cheap bastage.  When the program first started they (being Comed) gave me like a $15 or $20 credit each month during the summer.  Now I think it's only $5 or so.

In about ten years thatI've had it, it's only kicked maybe two or three times.  not enough to even notice.

Last summer an old employee of mine was doing A/C work for an apartment complex.

He kept getting these strange no cool calls but couldn't find anything wrong. Took him almost a month before he hit one the power company had shut off while he was there.

Turns out the complex was getting the credit and the tenants weren't happy.
