Facebook, another passing fad??
« on: March 22, 2011, 08:55:27 AM »
Apparently at the moment if you want to be involved with the music industry Facebook is where it's at. It used to be Myspace, now it's Facebook. Any thoughts on whether FB will stay for a good while longer or is it giving any signs that it is fading and something even newier and bettier is just on the horizon?

I give it to the end of the decade at best before something else comes along.  Don't forget twitter, too.

Hard to tell.  Facebook seems to have the right formula, despite a few annoyances.  I think it will be "the place to be" for quite some time.

I'm not saying this to be a smart ass but purely for the informational value. My 20 yo daughter says, "Twitter is dumb." She's kind of my little finger on the pulse of her generation. So far my CD is not a big hit with her.   =|

You're forgetting that Facebook's founder is some sort of megalomaniac, as well.

"Tom" from myspace was willing to cash out when it started going down the tubes and run with the money. Facebook has convinced its users that they need to use it.

+1 and then some.

One of my oldest, bestest friends is on there a LOT.  Here's a clip (NOT a magazine) that was posted on FB from a performance several decades ago.  The link is straight to YouTube for convenience.  Matt is the guitarist.  Just a still pic to go with the music, but enjoy the music.

I don't seeing it slowing down anytime soon.

I think if it does go it will only be replaced by something exactly like it. The thing is I think it has acheived 'ipod' status, as in the brand name has become synomis with what it is. People don't talk about 'social networks' in generic as much as they talk about 'facebook' as a generic. Also, poeple use it as a verb or action.

Myspace never managed that.

Regardless of it staying or not you are going to have to be there now to sell music and also so that you are tuned in enough to see the next big thing coming and get there too.

Facebook as an individual site may go, but the concept of social media as such will not. Much like the internet, no one saw it coming until it took off but now that it has exploded we won't go back. Myspace died because it A. made a huge number of massively annoying choices & B something better came along.

Cool, I just don't want to set myself up and have it fade 6 months later so I have to set up somewhere new. Kind of did that at Myspace, I tend to always be on the wrong side of the curve on all this moderny stuff.   ;/

I sort of wish MySpace stayed a going concern though.

It provided the social-network Internet a much-needed "wrong side of the tracks". As it dwindles, that's all coming to Facebook now.

Although I suppose proper management of your friends network should mean you don't see anyone/anything you don't want to.
I promise not to duck.

As long as you can't f up your FB as bad as Myspace allows...

I think facebook has the trick of keeping that from happening. The have very few means of browsing liss of users, and it requiers more effort and specfic details to find people. On myspace, I would get request from people trolling for dates and such. That does not happen on facebook.
Myspace died because it combined elements of dating sites, social networking and personal webpages.
Facebook does not, which keeps it viable and keeps the dumdums in check.
