Yes, if by "the size of dogs" you mean chihuahuas or small terriers or other purse-puppies.

However, I am more willing to agree with your assessment of the Aussie personality.  Wuss still lacks something as a description.

I've seen plenty of coon cats, a lot of hair. still not a big as a lab or German Shepperd - I found cat tracks not far from my bus/home feet away from a vast BLM wilderness, but bob cats/mountain lions are common where I live. They tend to stay away due to being shot at if seen.

My neighbor with a bob he shot in October near his deer feeder about 75 yards from my back yard. He figured about 25 lbs. Still not what I think of as "dog size", but as vaskidmark pointed out, chijuajuas are the size of housecats.

I've seen feral cats in the 20-25lb range in Florida.  Not packs of them mind you, but individual cats that big.  I would posit that 25lbs of feral teeth and claws in the dark would seem the size of a German Shepherd though.  My 9lb crazy cat can draw blood and cause pain when she's playing and trying to be nice.  An actual attack would suck.

My buddy has a soft spot for feeding the damn feral cats.   Glad he's not my neighbor.  Anyways, there is one bobtailed male that's probably 15 pounds.

These should be killed.  All of 'em.  We live in a typical suburb neighborhood with little lots.  The cats just end up tearing up the trash and making a nuisance of themselves.

My Dad and I saw a couple of cats out in the woods down here last year.  I think they would have seen or heard us, but a front was coming in and the wind was blowing hard in the wrong direction.  They were the size of bobcats at a glance, but darker colored and looked more like those coon cats.  They saw us and disappeared quickly so we only got a quick view of them.  Might have been just bigger shaggy house cats.  They were pretty skittish which I think they would have to be.  When I was a kid, a lot of dogs ran around the area at night (not anymore), but coyotes are pretty common.

+1. Feral cats are for shooting.

I thought lions were the only regularly "social" felines, though on occasion I've read cheetah siblings have stayed together . . . so it would surprise me if there's actually a "Gang of Cats" as the linked article in the OP states.  (Should it still be called a "pride" rather than "gang" even though they're little cats?)
