A good weekend shooting.
« on: April 03, 2011, 09:41:28 PM »
I spent this weekend at The Summit 2011 at Pelham Fish and Game. It was a gathering of instructors teaching 2 hour sessions on a variety of topics.

The list:

Chris Fry - Shooting around barricades/cover with carbines/ARs.
Mike Janich - Using knives for self defense. **
Bill Aprill - Handgun retention and takeaways.
Wes Dos - Shooting handguns in unusual positions.

Bill Lewitt - Tactical medicine.
Claude Werner - Shooting snub nose revolvers. **
Southnarc (Craig Douglas) - Managing Unknown Contacts. **
Rob Pincus - Combat Focused Shooting. **

** I will definitly take a full course with these guys. They are excellent instructors. Pincus will is first on my list.

There was one instructor who I wouldn't let teach me how to use a broom, but overall it was a good training session.

Is there a bad weekend shooting?

The only pros I've shot with are getting a little old and tend to make me look better then I am.

They wish they shot as much as they did 40 years ago as I wish I still shot as much as I did 15-20 years ago.

looks like a decent lineup!  i have yet to take a professionally trained course.  i am sure that i would enjoy it, as i have always been of the mindset that i need to improve.  my biggest fear is having the first instructor being one of the really bad ones, and me not knowing enough to realize it.

I've taken professionally-taught courses twice, once from Jim Crews and another from the late Ray Chapman. Both were good.

I highly recommend that you do so.  I can give you many recommendations based on your current skill level, what you want to learn, where you live, and how much time and money you have to spend.

A quick list of who I've trained with that I recommend:

Front Sight... Handgun. Yes, really. The training was solid. I ignored everything else.
SigSauer Academy - certain instructors. Handgun and AR, and Krav Maga.
Tactical Response - Handgun and AR
Trident Concepts - Jeff Gonzales. Handgun and AR
Weaponcraft - AR

Plus the four I highlighted in my first post.

Since Geronimotwo is in the Northeast:

Pat's home range is near Alderson, WV &eastern part of WV just south of I-64, Greenbrier Valley Airport. Comes highly recommended.

I've personally tanken classes from:
http://www.f-r-i.com/

Steve came to our homerange; enlightening, amazing how much better I shot afterward.

Stay safe, and get some training!!

thanks for the recommendations,  anything closer to binghamton ny?

as far as skill level,  i really have no idea.  i shoot in a local bullsye competition, and out in the backyard range, so i can put 10 in a pie plate at 50 ft?  i would like to work on my draw from conceilmant, but i'm sure that my overall stance, grip, etc could use improvement.

Try to see if there are any IDPA matches in your area . . . while IDPA shouldn't be regarded as "real world life-or-death" training, it DOES give you an opportunity to develop the fundamentals.

Yes!  Chris Fry.  He lives in Utica, NY, but does roving classes all over the northeast. http://www.mdtstraining.com/

Chris was the instructor for shooting around barricades with carbines.  It was the first time I've heard of him, but several of the other instructors know Chris and give him high marks.  Based on my two-hour session with him, I would train with him again.  He was knowledgeable, prepared, organized, and engaging.

eta: I don't think Chris Fry has a "home range" where he conducts training, but you can have him come to you if you can organize a class.  Get enough students together, and you could train for free.

He has several courses near Syracuse this season.

the mdts close quarter tactics sounds very interesting, and they have a number of classes within a 2 hour drive!

fyi, the f-r-i website still has the 2007 schedule listed as "new".
