I had a Dell touchscreen, that could be used as a netbook or a table depending on the configuration of the screen.  Worked fine.  Roughly same footprint as an iPad, but thicker.  But it had an keyboard, SD slot, USB ports and a few other slots.  Those are kinda important to me.  I see an iPad with virtually no (or none, I don't follow Apple products closely) ports and that puts it into "not worth a damn" status.

Uh...   All of them?   Only advantage iPod has is its integration with iTunes?   I've never owned an MP3 player that didn't do everything I wanted, which was play music with standard controls (play, stop, back/forward).   I had plenty of them throughout my time in the Army as I'd listen to music while running.

Yup.  As pretty as the iPod/iTouch format is, I've got an MP3 player that works just fine - and has a removable-media slot! - which cost me under $15, >2 years ago (and was at least 2 years old at the point I purchased it, I believe).  The 2xAAA batteries in it last freakin' FOREVER, and I can get replacements ANYWHERE - I don't need a special cord to plug it into the wall for a charge, or to a computer in order to load more music (if I want to carry half a dozen SD cards with different selections to switch between, I *CAN*.  It's even got a radio and voice-recorder option built into it).  I don't WANT a non-user-replaceable LiIon battery, thankyouverymuch, and I *DO* want a removable-media slot and at least one industry-standard USB port (including micro-USB, that's fine - does the iPad have one?  I honestly don't know).  I had an MP3 player which worked just as well, although I think the batteries didn't last quite as long, back before the first iPod came out.

Apple is not the be-all/end-all of media technology, and they appear to regard their users as morons who can't be trusted to perform even basic functions.  I don't like that.

I've had my 32gb iTouch for about a year now.  I have every bit of music I'd want to listen to stored on it.  I have every picture I've taken since 2000 on it.  I have apps for corporate email, facebook, checkbook, SSH, etc plus all the factory apps.  I still have 10gig free.  The battery lasts as long now as it did when I bought it (about 2-3 days of my average use).  It doesn't have a standard USB port, but 3rd party cables are cheap, so I have one in my car and in my computer bag (as well as the one at home permanently attached to my PC).  I can charge via the PC, a cig lighter adapter in the car, or a wall-wart adapter.  I rarely use anything other than the PC USB port for charging though.  I use it daily, but only for music about 2-3hrs per week.  I use it more as a pocket-able PC than as a music device.  It lacks a radio, but I'd rather listen to Pandora than AM/FM.  It does voice recording as well.  If I have WiFI available (surprisingly common these days), I can surf the web, send/receive email, watch a movie (netflix app), listen to radio (pandora), or keep up with Facebook.

If I *only* wanted music, then a Sandisk Sansa would be my choice.  They're so cheap as to be disposable, but they at play music well enough.  I didn't buy my iTouch for music though.

Well, sure... i guess. But it seems kind of pointless to bag on a company for something like that. It clearly works for them.

It seems kind of pointless to complain about "pointless" complaints. Some people don't like Apple's marketing, even if it "works," and we have discussion forums for just this sort of thing. Ya know, that "talking" thing.

WTF are you, Amish?  "Every bit of music I'd want to listen to" is part of the reason I have a 1.5TB external drive now.

I'll stick with my MuVo for running, and my Sansa for lounging around; both have really good battery life, and the Sansa's connector lets me pretend to have something as ridiculously proprietary as an iSheep.

Bit hostile, no?

Apparently some people can't tolerate the opinions and preferences of others.

Exactly; if Apple would respect the opinions and preferences of folks who don't care to tote around a bunch of proprietary crap, they'd be a much better company.

IMO, the MuVo was pretty much the perfect MP3 player; 1AAA per day if you listen to it all day long, and no cables needed at all.

First, nobody is forcing you to buy something you don't want.  iProducts don't work for you?  Don't buy them.  No need to be catty with those who find them useful.

Some people just don't know when to quit.
