Leather Seat Care & New Combat Boot Care
« on: April 13, 2011, 03:52:02 PM »
Just bought a used auto with leather seats.  They are in good condition.  How do I keep them that way?

Also, how is one supposed to clean & care for the new issue combat boots?  The tan ones whit the suede-ish lowers?

I thought they went to suede so you didn't have to care that much for them. And could do more "warfightin' stuffs" as opposed to "inspectin' stuff"?

I promise not to duck.

Most of my leather care (car upholstry, reclining chair, vests/jacket) is done with Lexol http://www.lexol.com .  I find it does everything I want.

The new combat boots are probably best cared for with a brass suede brush like this one http://www.shoecaresupplies.com/Shoe_Brush_p/suede-wire.htm?gclid=COvvvbarmqgCFYXd4AodWAo8Cg .  Knock off the dirt/mud when it's dry.  Dry away from heat and with shoe trees inside to retain shape.  Just do not scrub the suede - brush just firmly enough to get to the dirt without pulling away bits of suede.  Do not oil suede or apply waterproofing compounds.  Goretex socks/inserts will be your friend for wet environments - and remember if you are going to be getting wet to order boots big enough to accomodate the inserts, and plan for doubling up on socks when not wearing the inserts.

For car seats I would use saddle soap.

For current issue style combat boots, I don't have a clue. We still had black, shiny-toed jungle boots when I last wore the uniform.

What color are the leather seats? If they're a light color, you may run into a problem with dye transfer. I have tan leather seats, and the black from my denim pants and from my leather vest eventually works its way into the leather. I've tried dye removers, but they were too aggressive and left spotty areas.

Right now I cover the drivers seat with two white towels. I also use Maguire's leather cleaner every couple of months to remove any dye that may have transferred. It's a PITA, but the seats look good.

Toothbrush for the boots. Cheap ones are readily available.

Black leather seats.

Then saddle soap should work fine.

The reviews on the cleaners are pretty much negative.  The brush looks to be teeny - maybe good for getting into the areas between the sole and counters?

However, looking at the kit did lead to this which should remove any concerns about spots on your boots.

I'll second the Lexol recommendation. I used it on a leather motorcycle seat for years and kept it looking and feeling like new.

Another vote for Lexol. The Lexol line also has a cleaner.

Maybe.

Tinted windows, high doors, and a funky sunroof that allows for cracking it open to let out the heat will help.

FTR, my ideal auto colors are white outside and gray or tan interior.
