Americans no longer allowed to play. Arrrrgh!

Can somebody explain to me what the value of having a federal government is? What is it they do that is worth all the money they take and all the crap they pour on us?

were charged with bank fraud and money laundering in an indictment unsealed in a Manhattan court.

Apparently they were getting in the way of something.

It does not seem to be directly tax fraud, but I'll bet the feds are trying to connect fraud to some sort of tax on the earned interest or some such.  Maybe the folks running the online poker were putting their money in off-shore banks to get around the 2006 law against online gambling?

Seems strange the feds did not claim money laundering in furtherance of worldwide terrorism since they ;ole that scheme so much.

stay safe.
If cowardly and dishonorable men sometimes shoot unarmed men with army pistols or guns, the evil must be prevented by the penitentiary and gallows, and not by a general deprivation of a constitutional privilege.

not a gambling charge

From this ESPN article.

Quote
The charges are conspiracy to violate Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA), violation of UIGEA, operation of illegal gambling business, conspiracy to commit bank fraud and wire fraud, and money laundering conspiracy . Maximum penalties from these charges range from five years in prison and a $250,000 fine to 30 years in prison and a $1,000,000 fine (or twice the gross gain or loss).

And apparently it's just Poker Stars that won't let Americans play. But since that's where my money is there's no difference to me.

Did anyone else first assume it was Bloomy claiming the right to file charges in state court on behalf of New York City?

Heh, just checked it out, get a pop-up that says playing real money games is not allowed in your area due to gov't regulations. It's all BS, they are indicting them for getting around UIGEA. I've deposited money by electronic bank draft for a few years. They probably use an offshore processor. Pokerstars has been great, never had a problem cashing out either. So, I spent a few years learning to play decent tournament poker and just about the time I figure out how to keep it profitable the feds shut it down.

The big deal is that the company is registered in The Isle of Man, doubtful that any charges will stick. Just a BS fishing trip. I'll find a game somewhere, hopefully we can get UIGEA killed and online poker legalized.
