Houston, we have a problem!

Srsly?

California and New York get retired Space Shuttles, and Houston doesn't?  Cape Canaveral makes sense.  As does the Smithsonian.

Who the frak cares about CA in regards to Space Shuttle history and legacy?  Or New York?  Honoring them with a remaining orbiter is like opening an igloo museum in Iowa.   ???

I would have liked the remaining shuttle to have gone to the US Air Force Museum in Dayton OH.

They went to the Dem states.  At least that is what I figured.

Lots of landings were made at Edwards AFB.

Agreed that Houston should have received a shuttle.

How did Chicago miss out on one?

NY is getting the one that's currently in the Udvar-Hazy Center here in VA (that would be Enterprise), once it's been replaced by Discovery.  So we've already GOT one - the *FIRST* one.  Granted, it never went into space, while Discovery did, so I can kinda see why the Smithsonian wants to upgrade.

Houston *SHOULD* have gotten one, given the history there.  IMO, the only place in the country with more space cachet is Canaveral itself.  Edwards MIGHT come in next.

I thought that one was basically just a big model? I went to UH this winter. It's a very cool museum.

Cold, man......just cold.....

Wonder if the Johnson Space Center boys could work out a way to "divert" the CA-bound shuttle to an emergency landing in the Ship Channel?......

We only have a total of 4 left, and that's including Enterprise.  They're all accounted for.

I thought that one was basically just a big model? I went to UH this winter. It's a very cool museum.

Effectively, yes - Enterprise hasn't had any of the equipment necessary for it to be used as an actual shuttle for a long time now.  To be fair, they're all going to be stripped down and turned into the same sort of thing when they're turned over to the various museums.

And I agree completely with your assessment of the Udvar-Hazy Center.  I love that place.

Cold, man......just cold.....

My neighbor watched the fireball from that event through the scope of his 30.06. That's no joke, but it would make a good kernel of truth for a ridiculous conspiracy theory. I heard it and went outside and looked up, but didn't figure out what I'd heard until CNN and the intertubes started blowing up.
