Just wondering what your symptoms were like.....

If you suspect, even for a second, that you have contracted tetanus,

GO TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM NOW!

Tetanus cases have been less than 100 per year for the past 50 years or so.  I doubt you have it.

ewll, just for gits and shiggles, last Sat. I was cleaning out my aunt's back yard and stepped right on a ****ing nail.  Thing went right through the narrowest spot in the tread of my left boot.  Didn't bleed much, and I tried to clean it as well as conditions allowed.  Well, day before yesterday, left leg started getting a bit stiff.  It's still stiff, I got pins and needles up and down it (relatively mild) and last, a slight "constricted" feeling in my throat.
The wound looks ok, just like a little blood blister.  No extra swelling that I can see.

I didn't want to waste the emergency room's time, unless things look like they're going rodeo.. I sure don't FEEL right, but I'm not so out of it I can't function (hence the "looking it up on the net" thing. )

You need to consult a medical professional NOW.

When was the last time you had a tetanus innoculation?

Phyphor,

If you don't FEEL right then you need to trust your body.  Most likely it's some other kind of infection but those can get serious fast.  From the husband of a physician, go see a doctor!

When was your last tetanus booster?  The standard was once every ten years.  Physicians have since gotten more conservative.  If you had gone to have it examined you would have been given a booster injection if it was over five years of if you couldn't remember.

Don't wait.  Do not pass Go.  Do not collect $200.  The treatment outcomes for tetanus are not good on a percentage basis.  An ounce of prevention is worth about a ton of cure with tetanus.

I used to have a saying: "I won't go to a doctor unless I'm dieing".
Guess what. I finally went to the doctor on Mar. 10 of this year. I woke up on Mar 16, the day I got out of ICU.
Don't be me.
Don't put your family through that.
If you're wondering whether you should be going to the Emergency Room, then you should probably be going there yesterday!!!!! (which is exactly what I'm hoping, and that I've written this for nothing).

If you're waiting till you're dying to go to the doctor, why not skip it altogether and just go to a mortician?

That's just silly..it's like saying you won't take your car to be fixed until the motor blows.

When my Mom was starting out in nursing the Dr. called her and a few other nurses down to the ER to show them a person with severe tetanus . He was transfered to an ICU at a larger hospital, She doesn't think he made it. Get to the Dr. NOW
I'm OK it's the rest of the world that's messed up

Of course it's silly, but luckily I made it there before the motor blew! Not gonna happen again!

Like everyone has said, get to the ER now.

How serious is tetanus?
Tetanus has a high fatality rate: approximately 30% of reported cases result in death. As there is no good treatment for tetanus, the percentage of infected individuals dying from the disease has remained constant over the years in the United States.
Quote
What are the symptoms of tetanus?
The symptoms of tetanus are caused by the tetanus toxin acting on the central nervous system. In the most common form of tetanus, the first sign is a locked jaw, followed by stiffness of the neck, difficulty in swallowing, and stiffness of the abdominal muscles.

Other signs include fever, sweating, elevated blood pressure, and rapid heart rate. Spasms often occur, which may last for several minutes and continue for 3-4 weeks. Complete recovery, if it occurs, may take months.
Really read the last sentence!!!

I qualified in UK 1967 as an osteopath.  Late 1971 I assisted a guy to die - he had tetanus.  He was too far gone for treatment to save him - we did all we could to keep him comfortable.  It was distressing in the extreme.

It is not something to treat like a common cold - it kills - or can.

Ok, from what the doc said it ain't tetanus, but it's some other type of infection.  Not TOO bad now, but I'm on antibiotics (And had I have screwed around too much more, then things could have gotten a LOT worse, )

Glad you went to the doc.

Now, keep a very close eye on your foot. The problem with stepping on a nail is you inoculate your foot with whatever is on the nail, plus the bacteria gowing on the inside of your shoe. Then the wound closes up and the bacteria has a great area to grow.

If it is not getting better in 3-4 days, you will need to get back to the doc. You may need a different antibiotic. And whatever you do, FINISH ALL OF THE ANTIBIOTICS!!!

Soaking your foot in warm water 2-4 times a day for 15-20 minutes each time may help also. At least your foot will be clean.

I'm really glad you went to the doctor. Like BobR said, finish all the antibiotics.
There are worse infections you can get besides tetanus (such as Sepsis, which in its worst form, Septic Shock, has a 50% mortality rate) that are much more common.
I've been there, and it's a place I don't want anyone else to go.
Take care of yourself.

I've talked to my wife (a physician) about this and she said that you're darn right they could.  You could end up spending a month in the hospital on constant antibiotics through an IV or even have to have your leg amputated.  She has a patient right now who has such a bad infection in his leg that he has to have it amputated because he waited so long to get it treated.
