As I mentioned in an thread a couple of weeks ago, I've been with Hosting.com since early 2008. They've been really good. Then, a couple of weeks ago, they notified me that they were discontinuing VPS servers, and would raise my hosting costs for being on a VPS from $105 a month to $250. I called a guy in sales, he took a look at my file, said I should get a discount for being a loyal customer, and said he'd get a new quote to me.
He sent it last week. It was for $350 a month.
I looked at hosting companies, asked for opinions here, and settled on what many seem to feel is the best, Rackspace. The package they put together has more than Hosting.com's did, and will be $250 a month.
They have no stats program on the server. I already have a license I bought for SmarterStats, so I'm trying to install that on the new server. I worked on that yesterday from about noon until 7 pm, then got back on at 9 pm and worked on it until 3 am. I was back on at 8:30 this morning, and finally gave up at 2:30. I contacted tech support at SmarterTools.
They charge $80 for a phone call ($250 if it's for installation), so I went cheap and paid $50 to email them about my problem. It's 2:00 am in India right now, so I figure I might---and I stress the word "might"--hear back this evening. (I'm assuming tech support's in India).
I seem to recall at time when hosting services were inexpensive, weren't ala carte, and the software came installed on the servers. It's as bad as buying a law mower and having to assemble it. What's next, assemble-it-yourself houses?
