Anyone got solid info on Peoria IL race riot?

Either the server is overloaded, or they pulled the story.

I cannot find any other corroborating evidence, other than blogs.

    Tonight, around 11 p.m., a group of at least 60-70 African American youth marched down one of the side streets (W. Thrush) to the 4 lane main drag (Sheridan). They were yelling threats to white residents. Things such as we need to kill alll the white people around here. They were physically intimidating anyone calling for help from the police. They were surrounding cars. Cars on the main drag had to slam on their brakes to either avoid the youth blocking not only all four lanes, but a large section of the side street as well. fights were breaking out among them. They were rushing residents who looked out their doors, going on to porches, yelling threats to people calling the police for help.

    Cars were doing U turns on the streets just to avoid the mob, mostly male. One youth stated his grandfather was white and several assaulted him on the spot. One police officer answered the call. The youth split into two large groups, one heading north, the other south. They were also yelling racial threats to the police officer but he was outnumbered. Another police car did not show up until after the youth finally dispersed and the patty wagon (van) also eventually showed up.

    Residents are very shaken, both black and white alike. This is the fifth large mob action in about a month with smaller groups of 10-12 are out threatening children and adults a few evenings a week or later into the night. The times vary, even occuring during the day. In talking to the police officer, they are short staffed. Residents were advised to simply keep inside and to lock their doors. In other words buckle down, it’s not even safe to sit on your porch or go into your yards.

Supposedly, they're running around and shouting "We need to kill all the white people!"  They'd jump up on houses and intimidate anyone looking out their windows.  Work in groups too large for police responders to deal with sans backup, then disperse once backup started to show.

I dunno if this is a valid report or not.  I'd expect it to be picked up by more nooz outlets.

I thought this was going to be about a riot at a horse race or something (the way people in the UK riot over football).

Have to say that a riot specifically about race surprises me nowadays. Usually it's actually a bout race but is pretended to be about something else by all sides.

To me, and I know this seems extreme, massed mobs destroying stuff and trying to intimidate people is one of the uglier things humans can do to each other. We don't do this kind of thing in a civilized society.*


So I admit my first thought was:

I live in Peoria. Never heard anything about this.

Thrush and Sheridan is about 3mi from the projects. Which is pretty far away; past down-town, past the hospitals.

That is a part of the working poor up to middle class section of town, none of Peoria is really bad. Nothing like east side Joliet or south side Chicago. Thrush and Sheridan is all residential area.

This has got me curious, I'll keep my eye out for more info later today. Like dogmush says, I'll try to find out if this is some hysterical blogging.

Peoria ain't no disarmed Chicago suburb. It was the city that floated the idea of an experimental concealed carry region for Illinois. The idea didn't get too far beyond some press and the support of the Sheriff's dept, but the point is that the only people around here without firearms are the Indians on work visa.

I was wondering if it was time to fortify the doors with large furniture... we have a "Peoria" here in AZ, which is what made me click on the topic at Drudge initially.  My gut reaction was Aztlan/LaRaza takeover or riot.  I didn't think "black," I thought "mexican illegals getting cranky."

There was a hasty article in the (Peoria Journal Star) PJStar this morning; they interviewed additional witnesses that confirmed the group size, but their accounts deny any racial comments. The additional witnesses also don't seem to indicate the same level of aggressiveness/violence.

Due to the timing (friday night), my coworker is convinced that it was just a rowdy party group.

PJStar also interviewed police and council. One council woman knew the one witness who claimed racial violence. Her statement was this guy is known for being a crank (my paraphrase).

When the police arrived the group scattered, and there are no reports of property damage.


My conclusion:
Probably a rowdy crowd, maybe party related. With no property damage and no serious threat, its not really actionable. The blog entry was based off the one witness, and is probably exaggerated.

Saturday morning, police placed one of the nuisance abatement vehicles at the coroner of Thrush and Sheridan to try to quiet the area down.

I was in East Peoria this past weekend, spending time with a bunch of folks I served with, including one who is currently a Creve Couer Police Officer, and we heard nothing.

"You throw a riot on account of me?!?!"
