Smoking kills.

I'm a smoker but have never been quite this dedicated/desperate/stupid.

http://uk.news.yahoo.com/18042006/356/patient-dies-cigarette-fireball.html

"Patients have spoken of their shock after a man being treated in hospital with a flammable gel for a skin condition died after being engulfed in flames as he lit a cigarette.

The 60-year-old was thought to be having a cigarette on a fire escape near his ward at Doncaster Royal Infirmary in South Yorkshire when the tragedy happened yesterday.

He was taken to the Northern General Hospital in Sheffield with serious burns but later died from his injuries.

Margaret Eastwood, who was attending with her husband Colin, said she was horrified.

"He should never have been allowed to have a cigarette. Hospitals are meant to be no smoking but why was he allowed to have a cigarette? I hope there is a thorough investigation. It sounds horrendous."

It is understood that hospital staff followed the correct procedures and the incident was being treated as a tragic accident. An investigation has been launched.

Nigel Clifton, chief executive of Doncaster and Bassetlaw Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said: "This is a most tragic event. Our hearts go out to his family."

A spokesman for South Yorkshire Police said: "A 60-year-old-male patient sustained fatal injuries after being involved in a fire at Doncaster Royal Infirmary.

"An investigation has taken place, there appears to be no suspicious circumstances. A report will be prepared for the coroner."

A spokeswoman for the trust added: "An investigation has been launched. Counselling will be made available to staff, patients and family members if required."

Sometimes some people are just bound and determined to kill themselves.
I do not smoke pot, wear Wookie suits, live in my mom's basement, collect unemployment checks or eat Cheetoes, therefore I am not a Ron Paul voter.

As an example of the opposite mindset...My 75yo grandfather, who's in the hospital recovering from bacterial menangitis, has no desire for his pipe at the moment.  This is a man who's smoked a pipe (and cigars or cigarettes when the pipe was unavailable) for at least 60 years.  Other than high BP, high cholesterol, and Type2 diabetes, he's quite healthy.  He's making a remarkably quick recovery from the menangitis.  If he never picks up the pipe again, that'll be great, but I'll gladly pack a bowl for him if he decides he wants it.

Chris,

Your GF is still in the hospital? Wow. What is that, almost a month now?

Glad to hear he's doing better.

Yes, a month, but he's in the rehab portion now.  All reports indicate there's no long term damage and that he's making a remarkable recovery.  He stood, assisted, for the first time last week.  My grandmother says he's improving noticeably each day.

I still can't get over how he's not jonesing for his pipe.  It's been a part of "him" to the point that I immediately think of him if I smell pipe smoke.

So, lemme get this straight...this is somehow the hospital's fault and NOT your stupid-ass husband's fault?  Man, we are DOOMED...betcha she will even win a lawsuit over this event.

You're right, that is amazing.

Bacterial meningitis is an ugly illness. To get away with no apparent permanent impairment is pretty amazing.

"I wonder if his wife smuggled in the smokes for him."

My thoughts exactly...

The article isn't very clear, but it would appear that the woman who is quoted is NOT the man's wife.

So, are people normally allowed to smoke in the fire escapes in England?

And does anyone else see the irony in being engulfed in flames in a fire escape?

You know the old adage; It is the cigarette that smokes - the person is just the sucker.  Now we have a case where the person sucking smoke from the cigarette also smoked in their own right.  Incinerated tobacco, and incinerated person.

Wow. I knew smoking had various health risks, but I didn't know that auto-immolation was one of them shocked

My ex's (late) mother smoked through her trach when she wasn't on a ventilator for the last 6 months of her life.  As a nurse, I suctioned trach patients who smoked through the tracheotomy.

In fact, said late former mother-in-law was smoking when she pulled an Elvis and died suddenly while performing Valsalva's maneuver on the bedside commode.

Just to play the devil's advocate:

Maybe they didn't tell him the gel was flammable. If not, then here's what happened from his point of view:

I'm getting this nice cool cream put on me to help cure my skin condition. They told me to just lie here but gee, it's boring. I think I'll just step out on the balcony and have a smoke.

WHOOSH.

When I was still in health care we had a man die after he set fire to his bed.  He was in hand restraints because he was in DTs.  He tried to burn through the restraints so he could smoke.  His wife had left him the cigarettes.

Not fun.  I had that when I was 4 years old.  I don't remember much about it but I know that it damn near killed me.
