Finale on my parent's basement...
« on: April 17, 2006, 11:04:10 AM »
One of the things that I found in the basement as I was cleaning was my Grandparent's photo album. My idiot Aunt just threw it down there...

There were a LOT of irreplacable family photographs.

I found these two views of the house, the first taken in the summer of 1947, and the second taken in approximately 1985.

Chris, I promise you I WILL get in two or three good shots before your daughter takes me down... Smiley

But, even before the surgery I was more of a man that you'll ever hope to be. Cheesy

C'mon, Mike.  Cool it.

Seriously, though, your dress is absolutely adorable.

Is your parent's house near the water? We have some houses similar to that down by the river here with the "crow's nest" type balcony on the top floor.

Nope, it's in central Pennsylvania.

The third-floor balcony is off the maid's quarters.

My Grandparents had a live-in maid for many years.

Heh, my stupid aunt tried to toss the same kind of stuff. I pulled it all out of the trash. In amongst the family photos dating all the way back to the very early 1900's she had also tossed an album with numerous pictures of my uncle when he was stationed in New Guinea during WWII. I forbade her to throw ANYTHING ELSE away until I had seen it. angry

Nope, no Hoffa.

And yes, it is a very cool house. All of the interior woodwork is clear American chestnut, and has never been painted. It's absolutely gorgeous.

This picture of the fireplace gives you an idea of the kind of woodwork in the house. The floors, of course, are oak...

Great find Mike and beautiful house too - they don't make those any more - well unless you have huge bank accounts!

The biggest problem in that area is that these old houses are immediately chopped up into 4 or more apartments.

I finally have all the family photos in one place.  One of my mother's father's family:  My great-grandparents and the ten kids, taken when my grandfather was 5 years old.  1890.  German background, at hallettsville, Texas.  The usual frozen faces and the uncomfortable formal clothing of that era.

My mother's mother's brothers in a corral at the XIT ranch, where they cowboyed in the late 19th/early 20th centuries.

Y'know, I can sure see the changes over the years in "What is a house?"  My parents' first house was small; two bedrooms and one bath.  Detached one-car garage.  Wood frame.  Now, for all that the architecture has changed from Mike's parents' house, EVERYBODY wants a 4/3 with three-car garage with HVAC.  And no more narrow lots.

Narrow lots, no A/C and front porches meant the neighbors all knew each other and socialized--in those days before the Boob Toob.

A different world...
