Let's see your work benches!!!
« on: August 22, 2011, 06:18:31 PM »
Okay, I'm looking at my garage and realizing one thing I'm sorely lacking is a good, flat surface to work on things on.
I have to areas, both about 55" wide where a bench of some kind could go. Contemplating building my own.
Area A is level, but I could only get away with about 20" deep.
Area B is an elevated portion of the slab at the back of the garage (about 2" high), but about 26" deep.

Lets see 'em!

You can't see mine.

In fact no one can see. mine.

As it is currently covered in crap and sundries.

I'll see if I can take a picture.

Some days even my lucky rocketship underpants won't help.

Mine is 2 half height sections of gorilla rack shelving for the base for about 8' long.  I added extra particle board to the top so the work bench is 1 3/4" thick

Reloading bench.

Work bench is to the right, barely visible in this pic:

It's just a Home Depot cheapo special, inherited from my dad.  He had it for 20 years, got it when we lived in Minnesota and I was in junior high.  I think they run about $100 now when on sale.

my dad still has an old government issue work bench.  about 12' long and 32" deep.  solid as a rock with four 3' drawers under each end. it has a nice "backsplash" that goes around the back and sides, and a 1/4" thick replaceable masonite top over about 2" of plywood.  why the .gov got rid of it i'll never know.  had a couple drooling over it at my dad's last garage sale. they said they wanted it for their kitchen!

Front views of a workbench built with corner and support pieces purchased from Target.com.  The lumber came from Home Depot, including a pressboard tabletop panel.  The two shelves are waxed pressboard that came free from a friend who had a bunch laying around.  Keyboard and tray mounted underneath are leftover from my former computer repair business.
In the pics I am testing some surplus memory leftover from the business prior to putting it on eBay.

In the back of the second pic is an inexpensive Craftsman steel workbench with a metal-over-wood top and steel drawers from purchased from Sears about six years ago.  It's been pretty handy, as well.

I have two main workbenches.

The first is an ex-Navy electronics bench.  About 7'X3' the top is 1 1/2" laminated wood, and the backsplash is grey metal and wired for AC/DC power.  I don have a pic of it but it's pretty good.  I use it for gun-building/smithing and reloading.

When I needed more I built my own.  It's a combination work/welding bench.  The legs are 4x4, the top and bottom support are 2x3 steel angle iron the shelf on the bottom is 2x8 bolted to the angle.  The shelf holding up the welders is 1/2 marine starboard with 1" angle supports, and I built the welding top from a piece of 1/2" steel plate.  The wood top is 2X6 rough-cut pine, glued together, then drilled through on a plane with the top and bolted with 5 5/8" all thread pieces.  Then I sanded it, routed the edges and put a gallon of Spar-thane Marine Polyurethane on it.  It took me some time and effort to build but it's pretty dang solid. I have rebuilt transmissions and outboards up there.  The under bench tool boxes hold my sockets and ratchets, and if I need to fab, just flip the switch, and open the bottle and either welder is up and running.  Overall dimensions is 9'6"X2'6".  Wood top is 6'6" long and the welding area is 3'.  before you ask, I have no idea what it weighs.  I built it in place.  The welding top is about 175# by itself.

**Note, since I took those pictures, I dropped three more outlets on the wall behind it, and mounted the Ar bottle for my TIG welder.

AZ, since you already have the scale, have you considered the automatic powder dispenser?  I got one and I'm never looking back, it's a great time saver when throwing a bunch of varied weights for testing (it will throw a 90gr load while I'm seating a bullet...then the next charge is ready to go!, cuts my charge/seat/measure time down to <60sec a round with 80-100gr charges and measuring every round)

Interesting.  Defintely gives me ideas.
Garage is short on outlets. The spot on the ledge gives me more acess to the only wall outlet in the garage, and then I'd have a deeper bench.

Thanks gents.

Oh, I'll have to snap some pics of my setup.  I ran power to the benches.  This is not mean feat, as one bench is an island, and power had to be dropped from the ceiling down

No floor?  Knee pads are cheap.

Seriously though, after pricing some of the tool boxes and work benches pictured here, it might be cheaper to buy an old truck, park it in the garage and use it as a combo bench and tool box.....and would even provide a semi- legitimate need to buy more tools.

Made with a few cheap 2x4's, and half of a sheet of 1/2 thick plywood.

Circular saw, Propane torch and an Iron up-side-down in the bench vise.

Nope, not going  to ask.

The empty beer bottles are a nice touch.

Garage: Came with the house.  Built when the house was built.  Real 2x4's and other dimensional lumber.

Basement reloading bench. southern pine 2x4's and 3/4" plywood surface.

I've got a short wire shelving unit off to the right that holds the presses not in use, powder, and shot.  Boxes and tubs on bottom shelf hold hulls and wads.
