My first set of Red Wings - all over again.
« on: September 02, 2011, 05:50:35 PM »
I'm a little pumped that I just got a pair of brand-new, American-made 2218 loggers for about $115. (The company paid the balance of the hefty, Red Wing store price tag.)

The pair I bought last year were the wrong size, and I ended up getting a different brand:

Another cool thing about Red Wing is that they don't mess around with stupid kilties, and they threw in a pair of proper (black) laces for me, in addition to the measuring and fitting, literally waiting on me hand and foot.

Do they make narrow widths  ???

Seems like nobody does anymore, even the expensive brands.

I need a new pair of fire boots.

I had a pair of the Red Wing loggers years ago when I was telephone lineman, very comfortable but the only downside was that they sure liked to attract and collected the mud.

The 2218s don't have the classic, waffle-stomper sole anymore. It's still pretty chunky, but I doubt it will hold as much mud as the old standard.

I don't really like it, but I'll give it a try.

Looking at the picture of the sole on the redwing website they look just like mine did 17 years ago. Where I worked/lived had a lot of clay in the soil also.

edit- didn't see the pic of the new sole, those look like they would collect mud for a living.

OK
So we're talking about boots.
If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.

Congratulations.  Mine are sitting happily in my closte.

I look forward to wearing mine more in the winter.  I wear lower, 6" RWs in the summer.

One thing:
RWs prefer black shoe cream to old-school shoe polish.  Nowadays, I only break out the paste polish (Kiwi or Lincoln) if they are scuffed good & bad and need the dye to color in the gashes or if I am jonesing for a spit shine.

Thanks for the tip. I've been using oil for years now, with just occasional polishing for color's sake. I just happen to have a bottle of the Red Wing oil right now. Will look into the creme.

It must be my lucky weekend, or just the weekend the bargain gods chose to take all my money. I just found an Ethan Allen couch for $100. We've been using a stupid futon couch for a long time, and it is fail. The "new" couch is quite faded on the back, but it's up against a wall, so not a problem.
