Another generator thread
« on: November 24, 2011, 07:33:51 PM »
My parents and I need to get generators and a few other people I know also.
I can get a a honda eb6500 for about 2100 bucks they retail at 2700. So I told my dad.
I know they make great generators so we don't need to debate that.
He sends me a link to a gen on northern tools website, there brand (north star) powered by honda engines. Anyone have one of these units? How do they compare?
I have a loner Chinese harbor freight 5500 watt right now and it sucks, very dirty power. I can watch the lights flicker.
Any thoughts?
I needed a mod to change my signature because the concept of "family friendly" eludes me.
Just noticed that a mod changed my signature. How long ago was that?

I do believe Northern Tools contracts out a lot of their house brand stuff to China.

Maybe you should read this link to a tractor forum I am a member of...

Got a Northstar 5500PPG.  I've had it for over 10 years.  Always starts and never lets me down.  I keep the tank full of gas and top off with a bit of Sta-bil or similar product.
usually starts on the first pull.  Change the oil and a plug now and then.

Put the whole house through a bypass switch into another service hooked to the gen.  The reason you put the entire house over is that you only use what you need when you need it.  You control that.  You run the needed stuff like refrigerators and furnaces and pumps.  You'll never have everything working anyway.  So if you need a light or an outlet that wouldn't normally be necessary, you'll have power.

Northstar will cost less than half of what you'll pay for a Honda system.  You get the Honda engine and a fine Northstar genny.
