Frank Zappa is a pretty strange source for anything. ;)

There's a difference between "hip young exec's" and "hippies", even though Zappa mentions hippies. He's right about the old guys, and he's right about the young guys. The really good managers--Albert Grossman for Bob Dylan, for example--managed to cut through the executive bull and convince them to give the musicians a chance. Allen Klein screwed the Stones, but was enough of a hard-headed businessman to get them the creative freedom they wanted.

There was a lot of garbage music in the 60's because a lot of recording exec's were just throwing stuff at the wall to see what would stick. Sometimes they got lucky. Van Morrison got a chance because his voice sounded very, very similar to Mick Jagger's. If it hadn't, he'd probably be managing a hardware store in Belfast.

I figure he had a better look at the inside workings of those times than I did.

The last couple of nights I've been staying up until 2 or 3 am listening to more music from the 60's. There's a lot of really, really good stuff I haven't heard in years:

1. Cream, "Sunshine of Your Love"
2. Cream, "Badge"
3. Cream, "I Feel Free"
4. Wilson Pickett, "Funky Broadway"
5. Wilson Pickett, "Mustang Sally"
6. Ben E. King, "Stand By Me"
7. Aretha Franklin, "Respect"
8. Sam & Dave, "Hold On, I'm Coming"
9. Sam & Dave, "Soul Man"
10. Wilson Pickett, "In The Midnight Hour"
11. Percy Sledge, "When a Man Loves a Woman"
12. Arthur Conley, "Sweet Soul Music"
13. Eddie Floyd, "Knock On Wood"
14. James Brown, "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag"
15. The Doors, "L.A. Woman"
16. The Doors, "Love Me Two Times"

I could probably do this every night for a year and keep coming up with more great stuff I haven't heard in decades.

Don't you have an oldies station where you live? I've heard most of those in the last week or so.  =D

The biggest radio station in the Huntsville/Decatur area has an output of 5 megawatts. I can lose the signal going around a block. WISN radio in Milwaukee has a daytime signal output of 50 megawatts, and you can pick up the station until you get close to O'Hare in Chicago.

So, to answer your question, we do have an oldies station, but I have to drive a few blocks to be able to listen to it. ;)

I'm just having fun trying to remember songs, then going through MOG's library, finding them, and seeing if they sound as good or bad as I remember them. The ones above sound as good. I didn't mention the ones that sounded bad.

Reminds me of the college radio interview I did a while back. I left the studio and was driving home listening to the station while my CD was still being played. It faded out about 5 miles away from the station. Talk about reaching the masses. Not.

One of the Chicago stations--- WGN maybe?---has a 500 megawatt output. You can pick them up on a car radio in Kabul.

I was gonna say, I can remember those clear late nights long ago when I could pick up Chicago in Naugatuck, CT. That was AM though, I guess it travels farther than FM does. Ionosphere and all that rot.

Yes, it does after sundown. That's why some AM stations have to cut power at sundown, so they don't affect other stations that are close in frequency. I don't know how the bigger stations can continue to broadcast at full power. Maybe they pay more for their license.
