Do you know what kind of wood this is?
« on: November 30, 2011, 04:59:15 PM »
I'm looking for some knife handle material, and came across this burl wood knife handle. I don't recognize the wood, and the retailer that sells the knife doesn't know what it is, either. Do you recognize it?

Not sure of the species, I'm guessing maple or box elder (a maple) by the color.

Looks a little like Eucalyptus.

Although with a Burl, it's hard to say, since it always looks so off from the regular grain of it's parent wood, even the color can be different.
I promise not to duck.

I emailed the knife maker to ask. He's Japanese, though, so I might never know.

I'm trying to find another knife scale material, and don't want to do a reddish-brown wood again. I'd like to do something that almost looks like marble, which this does.

That's what I'm thinking, Hawkmoon. Here's a photo of spalted maple burl from the site Charby referenced:

The wood in the knife handle photo looks a little different, though.

I'm sure now that it's spalted maple burl. The question is whether that would look good as scales on a stiletto. It looks good on the knife in the photo, but that's a much different design.

Here's a quick Photochop job:
