Two students were shot, in Texas. Possibly accidental. Three men are being questioned. One of the men is said to have been hunting on someone else's land, sans permission, and an illigul uhleun, to boot.

The two men doing target practice may have been in the right line of fire to hit the students, but it would have been from a distance of about 800 yards, or nearly a half-mile, Trevino said.
Quote
Homes line the road approaching the school, but open fields stretch out behind it and to the north.

I have to believe the details are off here, but 800 yards across "open" fields is not all that far and the school should have been visible, especially with the drought conditions this year (I am thinking in terms of cow pasture type land).  Now, if the fields are not so open and have a bunch of trees or brush or slight hills, visibility would not be so good.  I still find it hard to believe anyone who was half way familiar with the property wouldn't know the school and homes were "over that way".  The didn't mention if the target shooters were using a decent backstop or berm.

I also didn't see any mention of other bullets hitting walls or other stuff.  Two bullets hitting kids and no flyers doesn't sound as random as I would expect.  I guess there is likely a lot more information not seen here.

The linked story says a third guy - an ILLEGAL ALIEN who was TRESPASSING with an ASSAULT RIFLE was also apprehended.

Wonder if he had a Fast & Furious gun . . .

He probably had a rifle built with an 80% receiver.   ;)

Maybe it was the comments, but it was said the target shooters and the illegal were shooting 30 caliber and 223 so they should be able to eliminate at least one of the two.

This story is just weird. So one illegal alien, with an "assault rifle", and two other guys, are out "hunting, and target shooting" close to a school and "accidentally" hit two different kids. Were they together?  Maybe school just got out, which could explain why two had gotten hit without anything else.

Now that I think about it, I am not sure it actually said it, but supposedly one kid was playing basketball outside the school and another was nearby.  There was no mention of any other shots.  It would seem strange to me if only two shots went by and both hit someone.

Basketball tryouts.  School was not in session.

A Texas Department of Public Safety helicopter quickly responded to the area and located a man hunting north of the campus with a .223-caliber rifle, Treviño said.

Authorities tracked down two other men with .30-caliber rifles on the land leased to deer hunters that borders the campus’ north and west sides.
Quote
The school occupies a roughly 40-acre plot bordered by hundreds of acres of ranchland leased to deer hunters, who regularly use high-powered rifles to shoot their prey.

A wooded area begins about 400 yards from the school’s western fence line — the spot where investigators believe the shots were fired, Treviño said.

Quote
The sheriff said deputies would walk in several lines to comb “every square inch” of the hunting grounds for any bullet casings that may have been fired Monday afternoon. Investigators will be accompanied by dogs trained to pick up the scent of recently fired munitions.
Good luck finding all the brass.  Whenever we shoot down in the woods at my parents house, if we find 80% of the brass we call it good.

It sounds like they really don't know if these people made the shots, those are just the people they found.
