Tank bags for dual sport motorcycles
« on: September 10, 2011, 01:18:53 PM »
I was on ADV the other day and saw the neatest concept:  http://www.tankvest.com/

A guy has come up with the idea of sewing a vest with MOLLE loops on it to fit a dual sport motorcycle fuel tank.  You then pick your preferred MOLLE bags and strap them on.

Apparently he is just slammed with orders since his first posting on ADV, and the first vests are for a KLR.  He is going to make more vests for various BMW, the DR650, and others.  I am going to be watching this, and may well get one for the DR650.  I have been pondering a Wolfman Expedition, but really like the modular concept of the tankvest.

Thank you, that's exactly what I've been looking for! Unfortunately, he is not taking orders now  =(

The site says they have some custom colors available if you were to contact them about them.

Some representative photos.  I look at this and think "Why didn't I think of this?"

Maybe what we need is a similar platform for rear bags: a rigid panel with MOLLE loops that fit like panniers off the rear seat.

Tankbags on a dualsport are ok for just riding around on the street, but on single track, particularly steep uphills, they get in the way of legs and thighs and other parts while shifting body weight forward .  I have had to take the tank bag off and bungee  it to the rear fender on my dr650 to be able to comfortably ride in rough terrain.

I bought a Wolfman bag for mine (KLR650). It was ~$125 or so plus shipping.

There are four quick-release buckles and it's off the bike and safe from theft.

Clear map case on top, a small pocket in the rear and it expands to fit a pretty big load. A water-proof cover is available (and I bought it).

The MOLLE thing is pretty cool, though! If you had a genuine USMC KLR650, it would *really* rock.

I'm at "banned camp" over at ADVRider for a few weeks yet. I wrote some naughty words in response to a nitwit and got hit with the 'schwerk'. :-(

I got banned for a week at BARF  for not being able to ignore personal insults awhile back....I bookmarked the page for the future when I own a KLR

Wow.  I do a google search to check out the SEO ranking on my site, and look what pops up.  =D

Those of you who post at ARFCOM, THR, and GRM have known me (or of me) for many years.  For those who don't, hi from WV!

How much would you charge for custom work?  Dependi on cost, I'd be willing to foot the bill for a tank and tail custom one, that you could then sell.

That's one of the most requested bikes we've had so far.  Looks like early next year.  Right now we're doing a VStrom, next up is a Harley with the large-capacity tank commonly used by LE as they're clamoring for it.

Which bike - KLR650?  If not we'd need to find one of whatever you have.  Are you local to the eastern WV panhandle?  These things are custom fit.

'11 CBR1k, and yes, I am right by Dulles and am out in Winchester and the panhandle area regularly.  Depending on price and such (send me a PM with email info and we an take it offline), I may be able to just leave it with you.

Santa brought me a Wolfman Expedition tank bag for the DR650, but I will still be interested to watch out for the tank vest.
