Retractable extension cord reel
« on: January 01, 2012, 06:22:23 PM »

Has anyone ever had good luck w/ one of these that didn't cost $300 ... I had hoped to get one for $50, bumped it up to $75, then $150 and still everything I see is made out of plastic w/ reviews that say they only work from 6 months to a year.  Reelcraft has one for $285 but the damned cord is only 40' long and I need at least 50' ... Have any of y'all found a brand that won't break the bank that you could recomend ?

Thanks ...  =|

Using extension cords on a regular basis working, I still just roll them up by hand.

I have a few of the plastic H's because they are nice to wind the 50' plus cords around.

Any reason it has to be an auto-retract model?  I have the cheapo Home Depot you-wind-it cord reel.  Use it all the time and will easily hold a 100' cord.

These are made to be attached to a ceiling or wall on a more or less permanent basis ... Does anyone have any positive or negative input re. Northern Tools ?  I found this one that has a long enough cord but it has no reviews.  It does have a 12 month warranty, which is substantially longer than the other ones I've seen ... I want to hang it from the ceiling and a 'you wind it' would be inconvenient ... next size down has good reviews ...  =|

I use these all the time in my shop.  We've found that the rotary contacts in the less expensive ones fail quickly with any kind of real use.  I've burned those NT reels out with 11-12 amps over about 45 min.  They don't hold the 15 amps they're rated for.  The only thing I have luck with on the cheap reals is florescent lights.

Reel-craft and Hubbell are the only ones I've had last under real use.  and they're pricey.
