Very cool.  I've actually walked the deck of two other Essex-class ships preserved as museums (Hornet and Lexington).  They are most impressive machines: there just wasn't a need for a 5th preserved, plus Oriskany was in extremely poor condition.

+1 - thanks for the post.

Some folks, thinking it would be hours before the carrier would sink, ended up missing the whole thing.  

Engineers (like myself) sometimes use the line from the movie "Little Big Man" when it comes to "predictions"  


Well, sometimes the magic works, sometimes it does not.

Anyone know what the story is with the small boat on the flight deck? I notice it remained afloat after the sinking.

It said what it was for right on the site.

Basically, it held the valuable stuff they wanted to keep ahold of and not sink with the ship.  This way they can just stick it on top of the next ship they want to sink to use it again.
