Need some help from the bass playing types
« on: April 05, 2012, 07:36:02 PM »
So I'm a (very, very bad) bass player. A good friend is learning the guitar, and I'm trying to learn the same song as him so we can play together. However, I can't find any bass specific music/tab/anything for it. I was wondering if someone with a better ear and understanding of musical theory than I have could take a listen and give me an idea of the notes involved? It's a pretty simple line, but fairly catchy. Song is the Mountain Goats cover of "Sometimes I Still Feel the Bruise." Here's a link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S1WFEFb3Q18&feature=results_video&playnext=1&list=PLFEC5D5DEA1AD30E7

Do you have the chord progression, or do you know the key you guys play it in?

Okay, it's been a long time since I tried transcribing something, but try these notes for the first couple of measures of the intro: B  E F-sharp E D A A D A D A G F-sharp E D E A A

No guarantee for accuracy though, and if the key isn't right let me know what key you guys are playing in and I can transpose it.

here are the chords http://tabs.ultimate-guitar.com/m/mountain_goats/sometimes_i_still_feel_the_bruise_crd.htm

it is better to play what you play well, than to try to copy what someone else does well.   if it were me, i would start by using the root note (of the chord being played) in the proper rhythm pattern. next add the upper or lower fifth, and possibly an octave as well.  after that is solid, try putting in a few run notes.  remember that the rhythm is more important than the exact notes, and you will sound "tight" if you are hitting your notes at the same time as the drunner is hitting his kick (or vise-versa).

eta,  if you do the song in a different key, it can be changed using the transpose function at the top of the ultimate guitar page.
