Owieeeee
« on: April 29, 2012, 10:01:24 PM »
So, over the last three years, the Mrs. and I have been mostly focusing on inside projects here at Casa de Driver.  Now that those are (mostly) done, we've turned our attention to the outside.  Had a friend who owns a tree service company come out and clean up a cedar and a couple of black locusts for us.  Once that was done, we spent today cleaning up a whole bunch of crap.  Ground a couple of old stumps down, pulled a metric buttload of ferns out from under the trees, and just generally cleaned up the front yard.

Well, remember those black locusts?  I had him cut what was useful as firewood down into rounds for us.

I just got done splitting and stacking a little over a cord of wood.  And I now remember why the last time we played this game, I rented a hydraulic splitter.

I hurt now.

Pizza is on the way.  Beer will be in hand momentarily.

I've lost count of how many cords I've split over the last couple years.  Lots of alder, brich, fir and cedar.  No black locust though.  Been selling to fund fishing stuff.

I feel your pain.

I have 4 acres that I just started clearing.  4 acres of craziness, that storm that came through the PNW this year downed a lot of trees in the forest surrounding my new house.  On a lighter note, in a year or so, I'll have a lot of firewood.

Somewhere in the garage are a couple of mauls.  They've been retired for well over 15 years now....

Same boat, but only an acre and a half.

Currently clearing all of the smaller trees and brush by hand. Too rocky to use a brush hog.  Good way of working off stress.

G-d bless the meen that invented the Hydraulic Splitter and the rental concept.

The VFD in the neighboring county bought one of those automated processors that cuts and splits.  They sell the wood for $140/cord delivered to raise money for their FD.

I still have plenty of trees that die and/or blow down for fun and exercise.

Gotta clear ~ 20 mature hardwoods to make room for more garden 'n stuff.  Reckon if there's
 any commercial value?

Actually the locust split pretty easily with a maul.  Couple pieces had a twist in the grain, which was a pain in the arse,  but a sharp axe and somewhat sharp maul worked pretty well on the rest.  On the rest, a splitting wedge helped.  A few weird pieces that wouldn't split were easily handled by the chainsaw.   :)

But yes.  Beer/motrin definitely helped...  :D

Nope, we had this wood when i was younger that came from the timbers of an old coal silo.
It was soaked with coal tar or something like that. One piece in the stove and it would glow.

I've split many a cord of hedge in my life. A couple years back I picked up a splitter, as long as I don't have too many 20x20 logs I can do alright.

I have a few locust trees I hope to drop this year. I ran a thorn from one deep into my foot as a kid. I just don't like them growing in areas I walk on much.

If they're reasonably straight and free of limbs for long stretch then yes.  That's probably a couple truckloads depending on diameter.  If they're twisted, and have tons of limbs down to ground level, they're not worth much more than firewood.

depends on the quality of your logs, and the current pricing in your area.  call a local sawmill for a price list, i have seen red oak go from $220/1000bf to $400/1000bf in less than a year.  if the price is low this year it may pay to wait.
